‘American Idol’ Season 24 stuns fans as Top 12 results scrapped at last minute after live voting goes wrong
Something very unusual went down on the latest episode of ‘American Idol’. The March 30 live episode, built around a ‘Songs of Faith’ theme, started on what you could call a rough note. Longtime host Ryan Seacrest stepped out and quickly began trimming the lineup, cutting six contestants right at the top of the broadcast. The removed contestants were Kutter Bradley, Ruby Rae, Madison Moon, Makiyah, Genevieve Heyward, and Abayomi. The remaining 14 singers had the rest of the two-hour slot to prove why they deserved a place in the next round, performing songs tied loosely or directly to faith, spirituality, or personal belief.
Keyla Richardson, Jordan McCullough, Daniel Stallworth, Lucas Leon, Braden Rumfelt, Hannah Harper, Rae, Jake Thistle, Chris Tungseth, Jesse Findling, Julian Kalel, Brooks, Kyndal Inskeep, and Philmon Lee all took turns under the spotlight. Each was hoping live votes would carry them into the Top 12 by the end of the night. But this time, things did not quite land the way they were supposed to. The show also brought in its judges for a bit of extra shine, with Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan opening the night together with ‘Jesus Is Love’. Meanwhile, Carrie Underwood closed the episode with ‘How Great Thou Art’, joined by former finalists. Then came the moment everyone was waiting for: the results. Seacrest returned to the stage and began setting up the announcement, explaining that more than 10 million votes had come in during the broadcast.
That is no small number, especially with the show experimenting by bringing social media voting into the mix for the first time on ABC. Instead of revealing which two contestants would be heading home, Seacrest suddenly informed viewers that the elimination would not be happening after all. The votes, he explained, had run into issues during the counting process, and the team behind the scenes made a last-minute announcement to scrap the results entirely. A “first” for the show, he said. The judges looked caught off guard. Contestants standing on stage seemed unsure whether to relax, while the audience did not know how to respond. It was one of those moments where live television reminds you that anything can go sideways, even on a well-oiled machine like ‘American Idol’.
So instead of a Top 12, the night ended with a hold. All 14 contestants remain in the competition for now, which sounds like good news on the surface, but there is a catch. The two singers who will eventually be eliminated are still going to spend days rehearsing, only to find out at the very start of the next episode that their journey has already ended. The postponed results will now be revealed at the beginning of the April 6 episode, titled ‘90s Judges’ Song Contest’, where the competition will finally narrow down to the Top 12 before performances begin again. Assuming, of course, everything goes smoothly this time.
