Georgia singer's ‘surprising’ vocals on ‘American Idol’ leaves Luke Bryan impressed and you’ll see why
Since its premiere in 2006, 'American Idol' has been seen as a launching pad for aspiring singers with no industry connections. Season 24 is keeping up with the tradition as a Georgia singer's emotional and hard-fought backstory not only grabbed major attention but his stellar vocals also struck a chord with the judges. While the singer earned a second chance on the show with a golden ticket, it was Luke Bryan's heartfelt praise that stood out most, as he declared the contestant was "born to sing."
The contestant in discussion is Philmon Lee who, ahead of his audition, shared, "I do insurance now, but that's not the end goal. I want to sing every single night if I can," adding, "I've been a musician my whole life. All credit really to my dad. He toured around with a gospel quartet group. I was on a tour bus with him ever since I was four years old. It definitely gave me a hunger. Even being a kid, I would say, 'That's what I want to do for the rest of my life.'" Lee revealed that he left college to pursue music full-time and even signed with a major label, but his momentum stalled during the pandemic.
He said, "I was able to record a lot and it looked that it was going to be pretty promising, and then COVID hit. It just kind of plateaued and I got shelved," before explaining why he turned to the show, noting, "…American Idol’s another chance at doing what I love and getting my foot back in the door. I have a voice and I want it to be heard," as per American Songwriter. For his audition, Lee delivered a powerful rendition of Michael Bolton's 'When a Man Loves a Woman.'
After the performance, Lionel Richie applauded Lee's performance, saying, "There's a difference between bent down and broke down. You were in both conditions. I mean, you were down. You were down. I said, 'How low is he going to go?' No, that was great interpretation, man," before turning to Carrie Underwood and asking, "Carrie, what do you think about this wonderful gentleman? Underwood said she was pleasantly surprised by the performance, noting how calm he seemed before delivering such powerful vocals, and jokingly advised him to take his hands out of his pockets next time.
Richie then encouraged Lee to lean into his natural talent and advised to improve his stage presence by engaging the audience and keeping his hands out of his pockets. Richie went on to say, “Now you have to become the character. And if you're really, really lucky and blessed, you won't have to worry about insurance except on your voice. And that's going to be covering you.” Bryan then showered Lee with praise, saying he was "making another Georgia boy proud." He added, "We've had 10 people today that look like they've been trained to sing, and you look like you were born to sing," as per Music Mahyem.
He emphasized, "We can't judge any book by any cover. We just have to let you sing. And then, man, when we get somebody like you, it’s pretty dang exciting." Bryan concluded by encouraging Lee's journey ahead, saying, "It is now, I think it should turn to shine." Lee then earned a golden ticket to Hollywood Week in Music City after receiving three "yes" votes from the judges. Celebrating the moment, Richie joked, "We're not selling insurance, but we're definitely selling tickets. Welcome to Hollywood Week."
