Gypsy Rose Blanchard married her husband Ryan Scott Anderson while she was still in prison for the murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. Anderson is from Lake Charles, Louisiana, where he works as a middle school special education teacher.

Anderson and Blanchard connected in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic. During the height of the 'Tiger King's popularity on Netflix, Anderson's co-worker expressed her desire to write a letter to Joseph "Joe Exotic" Maldonado-Passage, a central figure in the show.
In response, Anderson made a deal with her: if she wrote to Joe Exotic, he would correspond with Gypsy Rose Blanchard. Surprisingly, Blanchard responded, and they began a back-and-forth email exchange in May 2020.
Blanchard was drawn to Anderson's personal approach and the sacrifices he made for his family, including helping raise his nephew.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, Blanchard and Anderson couldn't meet until July 2021. While the details of their initial meeting remain unclear, Blanchard had reportedly engaged with men through a pen pal program before. She was previously engaged to a man named Ken in 2019, but they eventually separated.
Surprisingly, Anderson and Blanchard obtained a marriage license in Chillicothe, Missouri, on June 27, 2022, while she was still incarcerated. A month later, on July 21, 2022, they exchanged vows in an intimate prison ceremony with no guests present.

She said, "Whenever someone says, do you think that because of what you went through, you're going to do that to your kids? And I said, You know what? Absolutely not. I have learned what not to do."
Blanchard highlighted Anderson's mother and her own stepmother as strong maternal figures who serve as examples for her parenting approach.
She said, "I have other mother figures that are around in my life, friends that are mothers," adding, "So I have a lot of good people around me to pull advice from when that time comes. I don't think that there's going to be a manual that says you've won mom of the year, but I definitely have no concerns about I think my parenting when it comes to that time."
