HBO casts iconic comedian for ‘White Lotus’ and Season 4 is about to get wild in the South of France
The fanciest vacation on television is getting a few more unexpected guests. And yes, trouble is absolutely checking in again. The cast of ‘The White Lotus’ Season 4 is getting bigger, with two new and very different additions announced by HBO. Comedy heavyweight Steve Coogan has officially signed on, joined by rising actor Caleb Jonte Edwards, according to Collider. As usual with this show, details about who they’ll play are locked away tight. Coogan is a two-time Oscar nominee best known for co-writing and starring in ‘Philomena.’ Edwards, meanwhile, is a fresher face, having recently appeared in the Stan original ‘Black Snow.’
They’ll join a cast that already includes Helena Bonham Carter, Alexander Ludwig, and AJ Michalka. Chris Messina also just entered talks to star earlier this week. The guest book is filling up fast. The story for Season 4 is still a secret, but it's not too hard to imagine what the general mood will be based on the show's past. Each season has followed wealthy travelers and the resort staff tasked with catering to their every whim. The locations change, the accents vary, but the pattern stays deliciously uncomfortable. Entitlement bubbles over. Secrets slip out. Someone doesn’t make it home.
This time, the luxurious chaos heads to France. Specifically, the Château de La Messardière in Saint-Tropez will serve as the latest version of the infamous resort. After trips to Hawaii, Sicily, and Thailand, the French Riviera feels like a natural next stop. Think ocean views, flowing wine, and conversations that sound polite until you realize what’s actually being said. Coogan's presence means that the next season will include a lot of funny moments. His career spans decades, from the always awkward Alan Partridge stealing scenes as the voice of Silas Ramsbottom, the Anti-Villain League chief in the ‘Despicable Me’ movie.
More recently, he’s kept busy with projects like ‘The Sandman’ Season 2, the final run of ‘What We Do in the Shadows,’ and ‘Joker: Folie à Deux.’ Dropping him into ‘The White Lotus’ feels like giving a fox the keys to a very expensive henhouse. For Edwards, the HBO series represents a major step forward. Although he appeared in ‘Black Snow,’ ‘The White Lotus’ has the kind of rich history where unknown stars become a name everyone knows. The show doesn’t just spotlight talent. It launches it. That pattern has played out again and again.
Season 1 brought attention to Murray Bartlett and made Jennifer Coolidge a household name, as her character appears in Season 2. Later seasons kept raising the bar, pulling in actors like Carrie Coon, Walton Goggins, Aimee Lou Wood, Jason Isaacs, Leslie Bibb, Michelle Monaghan, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Parker Posey, and even global pop star Lisa. That star power helped the show rack up 23 Emmy nominations last year and maintain a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Moreover, Mike White remains in charge as writer and director. No premiere date has been announced yet. But the resort is open. And check-out never goes as planned.
