These couples included Genesis B and Mmathabo Thabby, also known as Thabi, Lebo and Nolla, Sizakele Dhlamini and Lindile Nibe, Courtney and Aiden, Ruth Khathide and Isaac Kaninda, and Khanya Nqolase and Nkateko Mahange.
Presented by the dynamic duo Salamina and Howza Mosese, the first season of 'The Ultimatum: South Africa' captivated viewers with its intriguing premise. The show followed a diverse group of couples, ranging from long-term partners to new romances, as they embarked on a journey to discover the fate of their relationships.
As the experiment unfolded, tensions rose, and emotions ran high as the couples navigated the complexities of commitment and the temptation of exploring new connections with their trial partners. While some couples found renewed clarity and strength in their relationships, others encountered unforeseen obstacles that tested the strength of their bond.
Thabi and Genesis
After being together for seven years, Thabi and Genesis decided to test their relationship on 'The Ultimatum: South Africa.' Thabi confessed that she couldn't imagine her life without Genesis, while he was unsure about taking their relationship to the next level.
Despite a rocky start, their bond seemed unbreakable until they started forming connections with other partners. Thabi found a connection with Lindile, her trial marriage partner, causing Genesis to feel uncertain about their future together.
Regardless of his doubts, Genesis eventually proposed to Thabi, and she said yes. While there are no signs of a wedding ring on Thabi's finger in recent posts, their love continues to grow stronger each day. Genesis recently shared a photo of them with the caption, "Marry or move on?" showcasing his dedication to their relationship.

Khanya and Nkateko
Khanya and Nkateko had been dating for a year when Khanya set a deadline for their relationship to progress. They began their relationship with high hopes and Khanya was eager for things to move forward.
However, Nkateko expressed hesitations about taking the next step, citing financial stability as a concern before considering marriage.
On the reality show, 'The Ultimatum: South Africa,' Khanya was paired with Isaac while Nkateko was paired with Sizakele. As Nkateko and Sizakele grew closer, Khanya became jealous and earned a reputation as the 'mean girl.'
Tensions between the trio intensified as Khanya directed hurtful comments towards Sizakele. Later, Nkateko presented Khanya with a promise ring, further fueling her anger. The promise ring symbolizes Nkateko's dedication to overcoming their relationship hurdles, aspiring toward marriage with Khanya in the future.
However, Khanya was not content with this gesture and ultimately decided to end their relationship. Consequently, Khanya and Nkateko are no longer together as a couple.
Currently, Nkateko is dedicated to improving his health and regularly shares his workouts on social media. Meanwhile, Khanya is focusing on building her online presence and nurturing her newborn son, who entered the world in January 2024.
Ruth and Isaac
After two years together, Ruth gave her boyfriend, Isaac, an ultimatum. She believed he was avoiding committing to her.
Isaac's reluctance to introduce Ruth to his family led her to question his intentions for their future together. He explained that his cultural beliefs only permitted significant others to be introduced if marriage was at the forefront, leaving Ruth conflicted about the situation.
"In my culture we can't just bring a woman home without that woman being our wife. If I have to break it down the amount of time that we actually spend together, I can put it back to eight months. That's still a short period of time to get to know somebody that well, and you have that feeling to get married to them," he said.
Their relationship underwent a dramatic shift when they participated in 'The Ultimatum: South Africa.' Ruth was partnered with Nolla, while Isaac spent his trial marriage weeks with Khanya.
The situation turned chaotic when Isaac uncovered Ruth's infidelity during her trial marriage with Nolla. Though he suspected Nolla might have played a role in influencing Ruth's actions, Isaac found himself unable to move past the betrayal. His deep-seated feelings of distrust reached a breaking point in Episode 9 of 'The Ultimatum: South Africa,' ultimately spelling the end of their relationship.
Lebo and Nolla
Lebo and Nolla, having been together for a year and a half, decided to join 'The Ultimatum South Africa.' Throughout their relationship, Lebo voiced her concerns about Nolla's flirtatious demeanor. However, Nolla defended himself, claiming his actions were merely friendly gestures with no ill intentions.
The situation escalated during their time on the Netflix show when Nolla's trial partner, Ruth, admitted to Lebo that she had been intimate with Nolla. This revelation caused a major uproar on 'The Ultimatum South Africa,' involving Ruth's partner Isaac as well.
Ultimately, Nolla's infidelity dealt a fatal blow to their relationship, resulting in their departure from the social experiment show.
Courtney and Aiden
Courtney and Aiden stood out as one of the most enduring couples on 'The Ultimatum South Africa,' having been together for a remarkable seven years. It was Courtney who displayed courage by taking the decisive step of issuing the ultimatum, revealing her innermost thoughts and doubts about their relationship.
In the show's trailer, Courtney opened up about her feelings of vulnerability and uncertainty towards Aiden. Despite their lengthy relationship, she found herself questioning whether her emotions towards him were truly rooted in love or simply lust.
Courtney found a deep connection with Aiden through her partnership with Genesis, realizing how much she truly loved him. Aiden, on the other hand, faced challenges when his trial partner unexpectedly left during the experiment.
Despite the challenges, Aiden experienced a moment of clarity during a heated argument between Lebo and Nolla, where he realized that Courtney was his perfect match.
In a deeply romantic gesture, Aiden proposed to Courtney, and the couple has opted to keep the details of their union private. Additionally, Courtney presented Aiden with a promise ring, symbolizing their unwavering commitment to each other as they embark on their journey as a united team.
Sizakele and Lindile
Sizakele and Lindile's relationship in 'The Ultimatum: South Africa' sparked considerable attention, given that they had been dating for only six months before Lindile made a bold move by issuing an ultimatum.
Despite facing their fair share of challenges and disagreements, Lindile summoned the courage to confess his deep love for Sizakele on the ultimatum day, leading to their engagement.
"The reason why I choose you is because I can grow with you. The reason why I choose you is you're my best friend. I can be myself, I can laugh and do all the weird stuff around you. And lastly the reason why I choose you is because I love you," Lindile shared.
Despite their demanding careers—Sizakele as an event manager and Lindile as a model and actor—the couple continues to thrive, although they are rarely seen together due to their busy schedules.
However, some fans have raised questions about Lindile's intentions, speculating that he might have joined the show to further his career, particularly considering his past appearances on reality TV shows like 'The Masked Singer: South Africa.'
'The Ultimatum: South Africa' reunion drops on May 24 on Netflix.
