From 'Cité du Cinéma' to 'Maxim’s restaurant': A look at exotic filming locations of 'The New Look' on Apple TV+
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The ongoing biographical drama 'The New Look' on Apple TV+ deftly examines post-war Paris, trauma, and fashion.
Created by Todd A. Kessler, the show delves into the personal and professional struggles faced by renowned fashion designers Christian Dior (Ben Mendelsohn) and Coco Chanel (Juliette Binoche).
The ten-part series, which takes viewers on an engrossing journey through Parisian haute couture in the wake of World War II, is highly commendable for its success in bringing the glamorous 1940s onscreen, with filming locations playing an integral part.
So, let's delve in and learn where the series was filmed.
Maxim’s Restaurant
Elle Decor reports that some scenes of the series were shot in the Maixm's, renowned for its Art Nouveau interior design. The restaurant's stunning color palette and decor made it an appropriate location for Coco's rendezvous with high-ranking Nazi officers.
Maxime Gaillard established the dining place in 1893, and during the 1930s, it was considered to be the trendiest spot in town. During the German occupation, high-ranking German officials and Nazi supporters frequented the restaurant regularly.
Having withstood the test of time, the restaurant is still considered as one of the most renowned worldwide.
Cité du Cinéma, Saint Denis
The majority of the series' sequences are recorded in the Cité du Cinéma filming studio.
The studio served as the filming setting for several scenes, including those featuring Christian Dior's Atelier at 30 Avenue Montaigne, Lucien Lelong's (John Malkovich) Atelier, and Coco Chanel's apartment suit.
Located in Saint-Denis, the studio was founded by French director Luc Besson. The studio is located on the site that was initially contracted to supply power to the metro system in Paris.
The studio features a 500-seat projection room in addition to nine distinct film sets spread across 11,000 square meters.
Grand Amphithéâtre at the Sorbonne
The first episode of the series features Christian preparing for the exhibition of his 'New Look' collection. The gathering, packed with journalists and fashion enthusiasts, was shot at the Grand Amphitheatre at the Sorbonne.
The historic edifice is well-known for its rich architectural feel, which has served as a venue for some of the most notable official speeches and events.
According to House Beautiful, the building was first inaugurated in 1889 and can accommodate over 1000 audience members.
Le Gallopin
The sequences in which Christian discusses fashion with his contemporaries were filmed at Le Gallopin. The brasserie, opened in 1976, is known for its classic French fare and inventive cocktails, making it a great spot to spend time with good company.
The brasserie's dining area features an Art Nouveau-style glass roof, which was constructed in 1900.
'The New Look' episode 6 is now streaming on Apple TV+.
