Angelina Jolie has been tapped for 'Sunny, a dark thriller starring Norwegian director Eva Sørhaug of the 'Yellowjackets' fame. The Oscar award winner made headlines recently for earning Golden Globe and Critics' Choice Award nominations for her portrayal of opera singer Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín’s 'Maria'.

Per Deadline, "In the spirit of classic mafia films, Sunny follows a female gangster who fights to protect her sons — and herself — from an abusive drug kingpin. But when a devastating event occurs, she only has a matter of hours to plot their permanent escape." The script was penned by William Day Frank with Nathan Klingher producing alongside Jolie, Mark Fasano, and Jeffrey Greenstein.

Speaking to the outlet, Fasano called Jolie "a tour de force," while adding, "People are going to be shocked by what she brings with this riveting character. This violent world that Eva and Angelina have crafted is grounded in survival and family led by a mother doing anything and everything within her power to protect her two boys." Klingher added, "Angelina has made this role uniquely her own. Strong, character-driven thrillers like this are rare, and the attention to detail that she and Eva have brought to the film is impressive to watch."

Earlier, the veteran actress spoke about her role in 'Maria'. In her recent interview with Grazia,  "I care for her deeply,” she said. "I'm very moved by her, and I’m so happy we had the opportunity to show her as a human being. When you understand that, you see this person’s survival instinct."

Jolie further explained, "She had to memorize everything very differently. She had to survive, hide it, and work twice as hard. To be very candid, it was the therapy I didn’t realize I needed. I had no idea how much I was holding in and not letting out,” she reflects. “The challenge wasn’t technical — it was emotional. Opera requires you to give every part of yourself, to be as open and as loud as you can be."

At the time of writing, there is no official release date or trailer for 'Sunny'. Watch this space for more updates on the Angelina Jolie-starrer.
