Sony finally drops ‘Spider-Noir’ trailer with release date and honestly the excitement is off the charts
Ever since 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' teased the existence of 'Spider Noir' with its gripping portrayal of the washed-up, down-on-his-luck Spider, demands from several sections of the audience ensured that a dedicated spinoff show was brought into existence. Now that the wait finally seems to be getting closer to the finish line, Sony recently dropped the first teaser trailer of the upcoming 'Spider-Noir' TV series on Prime Video.
The trailer does a fantastic job of transporting audiences to the black-and-white world of 1930s America. Set against the backdrop of New York during the Great Depression, Nicolas Cage plays Spider, an alternate-universe version of the traditional Spider-Man with significant departures from the character. For instance, Spider's civilian alter ego isn't Peter Parker, and the trailer revealed that Ben Reilly is the name Spider uses to refer to himself. Here is an iteration of the web-slinging superhero who doesn't subscribe to established morality, takes a considerably dark and bleak approach to life, and is somewhat of a drunken brawler.
It is only fair that such a version of Spider-Man must have his own powers and capabilities that are more in keeping with his day and age. Although Sony took away Parker's alter ego from Spider, they did establish the fact that Spider gained all his powers from a spider bite that was the result of a spider idol breaking and releasing a swarm of spiders. He soon assumed the same powers as those of any other iteration of Spider-Man, i.e., superhuman strength, exceptional agility and reflexes, along with spider sense and impulses. Despite these similarities, Spider wouldn't mind using a gun when the need arises.
As described in the comics, Spider was born and raised during the Great Depression. Instead of the classic Peter Parker using his powers to work as a crime-fighting journalist, Reilly went on to work as a detective. Being as lonely as any other film noir anti-hero, Reilly drinks his fair share of alcohol. His uncle Ben was killed for organizing a strike in Goblin's sweatshop. As a result, Spider swore to uphold justice and rid the city of the evil oppression perpetrated by the Goblin. The traditional Spider-Man enemies have been accordingly transformed to suit the narrative, with the villains' superpowers ditched in favour of their gangster origins. The villains are also deeply entrenched in the Prohibition-era criminal underworld. Norman Osborn retains his position as the primary villain, Green Goblin, while Otto Octavius will be seen as Doctor Octopus. 'Spider-Noir' is scheduled to arrive exclusively on Prime Video later this year on May 27.
