'NCIS: Los Angeles' has officially started filming new episodes for the upcoming Season 12. Daniela Ruah, who plays Special Agent Kensi Blye, broke the news about how the cast and crew were back on set by posting behind-the-scenes images on her Instagram in early September. “It’s officially the first day of NCIS: Los Angeles. I’m very happy to be ‘home,'” she said. She also told fans about some of the COVID-19 precautions on set. “Everybody’s here wearing masks and disinfecting everything and washing their hands and being very, very safe and getting tested, so hopefully we will be back and we’ll stay back in a safe and healthy way.”

Where we left off

Los Angeles Season 11 finished up with a dramatic episode that took Sam (LL Cool J) and Callen (Chris O’Donnell) to Afghanistan on a sensitive mission after two SEALs claim their chief murdered an unarmed prisoner. Though it wasn't the planned finale, it was an action-packed episode that made it finale-worthy. There was also some seed-planting in Season 11 with Hanna and Callen asking FBI agent Roundtree (Caleb Castille) to become a member of their close-knit team and since Castille is now a series regular in Season 12, we are going to get some fresh blood to rejuvenate the show.

What we'd like to see

Renee Felice Smith as Nell seemed ready to quit the show in Season 11, but the actor posted a picture from sets that shows that she is part of Season 12. So hopefully Season 12 will see a refreshed Nell who has worked past her burnout. The show will also, fingers crossed, incorporate some real-world elements to make it more relevant, just like 'NCIS New Orleans' will be incorporating the pandemic. For now, there is some indication that police reforms will be tackled through Eric Christian Olsen’s character Deeks, whose job as an LAPD liaison could be in jeopardy because of police reform measures. Maybe he could join the NCIS LA team full-time?

When is it returning

New episodes are set to air in November though no premiere date has been announced yet. At the earliest, we can expect it to start airing after Election Day. Once it does, it will be broadcasted during their regular 9 pm timeslot on Sunday nights.
