Who was Kristi Johnson?

Kristi Johnson was a 21-year-old woman who had recently moved from Michigan to Southern California with dreams of making it in the film industry. She was known for her bright personality and determination to pursue a career in acting. Her ambitions led her to Los Angeles, where she hoped to find opportunities in Hollywood.

On February 15, 2003, Kristi went to the Century City mall in Los Angeles after being approached by a man who claimed to be a film producer. He promised her an audition for a role in a James Bond sequel, which came with the potential for a six-figure paycheck.

Tragically, Kristi went missing after this encounter. Her last known activity was purchasing clothes, and surveillance footage showed her alone in the mall. Her sudden disappearance triggered a widespread search and investigation by the Santa Monica Police Department.

Kristi's body was discovered on March 3, 2003, in the Hollywood Hills. She had been strangled, and her death devastated her family and friends. The investigation eventually led to the arrest of Victor Paleologus, a man with a history of assaulting women, who had approached Kristi under false pretenses.

Why did Victor Paleologus kill Kristi Johnson?

Victor Paleologus killed Kristi Johnson under the guise of offering her a fake audition for a movie role. He approached her at the Century City mall in Los Angeles, pretending to be a film producer who could help her land a part in a James Bond sequel. He convinced Kristi to meet him, promising a lucrative role that was too tempting to pass up.

On February 15, 2003, Kristi followed Paleologus' instructions and went to the mall to buy specific clothes for the supposed audition. Unfortunately, this meeting was a ruse. Paleologus had a history of deceit and violence, having previously assaulted other women using similar tactics. His true intention was to lure Kristi into a vulnerable situation.

After Kristi's disappearance, it became evident that Paleologus had no real connection to the film industry and that the audition was a lie. He took advantage of Kristi's aspirations and trust, ultimately leading to her tragic death. Her body was found on March 3, 2003, in the Hollywood Hills, showing signs of strangulation.

Victor Paleologus was a dangerous individual with a criminal past, including burglary, sexual assault, and writing fictitious checks. He had been released from prison just 26 days before Kristi disappeared. His motive was not just to deceive but to harm, taking advantage of young women’s dreams for his own malicious purposes. In 2023, Paleologus waived his right to a parole hearing, postponing it until 2025.
