'Bloodborne' gets R-rated animated movie adaptation and it's set to stay 'very true' to the original game
After years of whispers and wishful thinking from fans, ‘Bloodborne’ will finally premiere on the big screen. Sony Pictures Entertainment has confirmed that the cult-favorite game is being turned into an R-rated animated feature. The announcement came during the studio’s presentation at CinemaCon, where executives laid out their vision for the adaptation. Sanford Panitch, who heads the Motion Picture Group, said the film will stay “very true” to what made the original game stand out in the first place, as per Variety. That means viewers shouldn’t expect a watered-down version. The eerie tone, the unsettling creatures, and yes, the heavy violence, it’s all part of the plan.
For anyone who has spent time wandering through the game’s haunting streets, this news probably feels like a long time coming. Developed by FromSoftware and released under Sony Interactive Entertainment, ‘Bloodborne’ built a reputation for itself with its dark setting and punishing gameplay. Players take on the role of a lone traveler entering a city that looks like it hasn’t seen daylight (or sanity) in years. The deeper one goes, the worse it gets. One interesting addition to the project is Seán McLoughlin, better known online as JackSepticEye.
With a massive following and years of experience playing and discussing ‘Bloodborne’, he’s not just another producer. He’s been part of this world for a long time, and he made it clear that he takes his responsibility seriously. In a message shared with fans on Reddit, McLoughlin didn’t hold back his excitement. He wrote, “I am producing this project and you have no idea how incredibly excited I am to finally be able to talk about it!! I am going to do everything in my power to make this the BEST Bloodborne adaptation possible. Not only is it my favourite game ever made but I know how truly passionate the fans of this game are and how much hunger they have for more of it.”
The film is being produced through PlayStation Productions along with Lyrical Animation, while Lyrical Media is stepping in to co-finance the project with Sony Pictures. What’s also worth noting is the decision to go the animated route. Live-action adaptations often struggle to capture the more surreal elements of games like ‘Bloodborne’. Animation, on the other hand, allows a project to embrace the strange and unsettling imagery that defines the story. Details about the voice cast, director, and release timeline are being kept under wraps for now, and all eyes are on Sony as the project moves forward.
