LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Skydance is currently in negotiations to acquire Paramount, one of the world's leading producers of premium entertainment content. However, the entry of an unexpected contender in the bidding race has changed the entire dynamics of the potential deal.

According to a report by The New York Times, Sony Pictures Entertainment is planning to collaborate with Apollo Global Management to offer a joint bid for Paramount.

Though no deal has been shaped officially yet, the reports have certainly baffled the industry.

What does Sony Pictures' acquisition of Paramount would mean?

Going solo, Apollo had previously proposed a $26 billion deal for Paramount, which was rejected. However, teaming up with Sony could place them significantly ahead in the bidding race.

The reports of Sony entering the bidding race have raised several eyebrows, given that Sony quit the streaming business in 2019, opting instead to concentrate on content production and licensing.

This strategic shift positioned Sony as a key content provider, playing a pivotal role in the streaming landscape dominated by giants like Netflix and Prime Video.

However, the recurring interest in streaming services may mark a significant shift as the combination of Sony Pictures and Paramount Pictures is speculated to create a Hollywood powerhouse.

Sony's entry in the bidding race baffles netizens

People on the Internet don't appear too thrilled with this potential collaboration, which could bring about massive changes in the content landscape ahead.

Expressing displeasure over Sony's potential takeover of Paramount, a fan wrote on X, "Paramount has been releasing quality tv and films levels above Sony. This makes no sense considering how bad Sony has been the last few years."

Another said, "As long as nothing happens to the Sonic Cinematic Universe or Avatar Studios I don't care" while another reacted, "Oh god please no."

Despite reservations from several Paramount fans, some are happy at the prospect that the 'Halo' series could possibly come to fruition after the acquisition.

Mentioning the same, one user wrote, "Now this is interesting. I like the Fallout show but The Last Of us was so much better. If Sony buys Paramount they can cancel that horrible Halo show. Im all set with Master Cheeks. Maybe they can make a better Authentic Halo Show?"

"One good thing about Sony owning paramount: That HORRENDOUS Halo Series will be canned," added another fan.

Some speculated that Sony might not have the financial capacity to acquire Paramount. One user commented, "Bro Sony can’t afford Paramount. Stop this."

"Sony can't even afford paramount it alone and needs a partner," another user added.

"If Sony actually succeeds in acquiring paramount, there are quite literally only going to be 4 major 20th century movie studios left. FOUR!!! that's f*****g insanity," wondered another movie buff.

Another fan suggested, "Instead of Sony buying Paramount, can we just let Universal Pictures buy Paramount instead or just leave it alone? Universal Orlando does have a SpongeBob store and Paramount does own some of the franchises that are UNIVERSAL (if you guys know what I mean by that)."

While the startling opinions about the potential acquisition are being discussed on public forums, the official updates are still awaited.
