'Matlock' fans assemble: CBS locks in Season 3 while Season 2 is still on hiatus and it just feels right
CBS just confirmed that several of its most-watched series are sticking around, even as viewers wait a bit longer than usual for new episodes to return. The reason for the delay isn’t unknown. With the Olympics taking over NBC’s schedule, CBS made the decision to push most of its scripted lineup into February rather than compete for attention in January. That left fans restless. So the network did the next best thing. It locked in renewals early. One of the biggest names on that list is ‘Matlock’. On January 22, CBS announced that the legal drama will officially return for Season 3. The decision landed weeks before the show’s Season 2 even resumed airing.
Early renewals like this aren’t the norm. Typically, networks hold those announcements until late spring, when ratings are clearer. Every now and then, though, a show performs well enough to skip the waiting game. ‘Matlock’ clearly fits that category. Since its debut, the series has been a consistent performer for CBS, both in viewership and reputation. Kathy Bates’ turn as the sharp, unassuming attorney has drawn steady awards attention. It includes nods from major industry groups, such as the Emmys and the Golden Globes. CBS has also pointed to the show’s dominance on Thursday nights, where it currently leads the ratings.
That kind of stability makes renewal conversations much easier. The Season 3 pickup wasn’t announced alone. Fellow Thursday night drama ‘Elsbeth’ also secured its future with a fourth-season renewal, as per GeekSided. Beyond Thursdays, the early renewal wave extended to several other heavy hitters across the network, including ‘Tracker’, both ‘NCIS’ series, and the comedy ‘Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage’. This reassurance comes at a time when patience is required. ‘Matlock’ last aired on December 18, 2025, wrapping up its midseason finale before heading into a lengthy hiatus.
‘Matlock’ Season 2 won’t return until Thursday, February 26, airing at 9/8c, according to TV Insider. That gap has sparked plenty of speculation, particularly around how many episodes remain in the current season. Some reports suggest Season 2 may run shorter than its predecessor, potentially totaling 16 episodes. If that turns out to be true, viewers would see eight new installments once the show resumes.
CBS hasn’t officially confirmed an episode count yet, though, leaving open the possibility of a slightly longer run similar to Season 1, which featured 19 episodes. Given the extended break and the pacing of the story so far, a trimmed season wouldn’t be shocking. As for Season 3, details are understandably scarce. The renewal came quickly, and the writers’ room hasn’t had time to tease much publicly. There’s no word yet on new characters, potential exits, or the direction of upcoming cases. What seems likely is a fall 2026 premiere, assuming the show holds its place on the schedule and production follows a typical timeline.
