'Yellowjackets' 4 casts Molly Ringwald for a key role after last season's unexpected tragedy
The past three seasons of 'Yellowjackets' have made one thing clear: that Showtime deliberately casts former teen stars from the 1980s and 1990s to fit the show's nostalgic tone. This was evident in the casting of Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis, Melanie Lynskey, Lauren Ambrose, and Hilary Swank for the show's adult ensemble. In keeping with this creative pattern, Deadline has confirmed that Molly Ringwald will be joining 'Yellowjackets' in a recurring role.
Ringwald will take on the role of Vicky, who is Van's mother, in the upcoming fourth and final season of the show. As is already known, the plot of 'Yellowjackets' unfolds across two timelines, and Van, in her adult years, is played by Amber Midthunder, while Liv Hewson portrays the younger version of the character. The show will depict Vicky as an alcoholic who has recently given up her addiction and is trying to get her life back in order. The casting itself comes at a prescient juncture in the narrative, especially since the adult version of Van was tragically killed in the third season. It remains to be seen whether Vicky will join the teenage Van in the 1990s timeline as the rest of the group is finally rescued and returns to their lives in New Jersey, or if she will be investigating the death of her adult daughter in the present day.
'Yellowjackets' expertly blends the best of survival thrillers with the uncanny twists and turns of a memorable psychological thriller. In between, the show has moments that feel like a coming-of-age drama. The narrative follows the members of a brilliant girls' soccer team who survive a deadly plane crash in a remote corner of the northern wilderness. The group, which is initially faced with several complications, soon spirals into intensely violent and hateful clans. On the other hand, the adult timeline revisits the characters in the present day as they strive to restore some semblance of balance in their lives. The past, however, continues to haunt them.
In addition to the above-mentioned stars, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Samantha Hanratty, Sophie Nelisse, Courtney Eaton, and Sophie Thatcher also star in the show. Production for the upcoming season has likely begun. Nelisse confirmed the timeline in late January, as she revealed, "We're starting in two weeks. We're very excited. I've already rented my place to Vancouver, and so we're about to kick off this final season." All the previous seasons and episodes of 'Yellowjackets' are available on Paramount+ with Showtime.
