‘Bride Wars’ gets TV reboot with Emma Roberts as the lead and honestly this is pure magic
Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway's 'Bride Wars' is all set to get the series-style treatment. The 2009 rom-com may have been a damp squib at the box office, but Peacock is optimistic that, with Emma Roberts as the lead and a tweaked storyline, it might see a more successful outcome.
The film followed two childhood buddies with major plans for their respective weddings. Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway play besties, Liv and Emma. Their respective weddings get booked on the same day at the same venue, The Plaza Hotel in New York City. What follows is drama and confusion as the women fight over who has to keep the date. The film ultimately ends on a happy note. The flick also starred Kristen Johnston, Bryan Greenberg, and Chris Pratt in key roles. The film was directed by Gary Winick and written by Greg DePaul, Casey Wilson, and June Diane Raphael.
The series has opted for a different take, with Roberts playing a big-city wedding planner who enters a competition with a beloved local planner in North Carolina. The official logline adds, "Set against the charming backdrop of North Carolina, Bride Wars, the TV series, follows a big-city wedding planner (Emma Roberts) whose arrival in a small town sparks an epic showdown with a beloved local planner. As the two women battle to plan the same wedding, their rivalry quickly escalates into a larger clash over friendship, community, and, ultimately, love."
Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan, and Natalie Lehmann serve as executive producers for the show. Roberts, Karah Preiss, and Matt Matruski add to the list alongside Alexandra Milchan and Martin Salgo. As for Roberts, the 'Space Cadet' star's recent credits include 'American Horror Story: Delicate' and 'Maybe I Do'. She also served as EP in Hulu's 'Tell Me Lies ' and is set to return to 'American Horror Story' later this year.
Despite the star cast, 'Bride Wars' fared poorly with critics panning the film. The critical consensus on Rotten Tomatoes reads, "Bride Wars takes the already wearisome concept of battling bridezillas, and makes it thoroughly insufferable via a lazy script and wholly detestable characters." It also brought in a worldwide total of $115.8 million on a $30 million production budget.
At the time of writing, there is no official word on the additional cast and a potential release date. It is also unclear whether the series will be limited or take a multiseason approach. Considering it is a reimagined version, speculation is rife that Peacock might view the series as a miniseries, preferably with six to eight episodes. However, nothing has been confirmed by the streamer yet.
Expect more details to trickle in over the course of the year as Roberts currently works on the feature film 'Hal,' opposite Alexander Ludwig. The biographical drama film also stars Ernie Hudson, Jeffrey Donovan, Aidan Quinn, and Leslie Bibb. Ludwig plays the real-life titular character Hal Donaldson, who co-founded Convoy of Hope, and the film is currently filming with no release date announced.
