'What If...?': Here's how 'Captain Marvel' would've panned out if some crucial plot details had been changed

Just before the 'What If' series goes on floors, here's an imagining of how 'Captain Marvel' would've turned out, if one plot detail had been changed.

Disney+ and Marvel’s ‘What If’ is all set to get our minds in a whirl, by mid 2020-2021. The animated series explores what would happen if some of the crucial events from the Marvel films had occurred differently. Here’s how we are re-imagining the ‘Captain Marvel’ film, and how the important events would have played out…if….one detail were to be changed.

What if the Skrulls were actually evil?

For the first half of ‘Captain Marvel’, we were led to believe that the Skrulls were the bad guys and Carol Danvers’s mentor Yon Rogg was on the good side. However, in the end, the Skrulls were actually innocent refugees, who were looking for a new home and the Kree were trying to exterminate the race. The Kree-Skrull war is a long thread in the Marvel comics. In the comics, the Kree are actually lesser of the two evils, and the Skrulls are actually the ones who are out to conquer the universe by infiltration.

So what if the Skrulls were actually evil in the film? The whole backstory would change, and Captain Marvel would be in quite a soup, and she would be part of the Kree army, who would be under attack from the Skrulls. This wouldn’t change the essence of the story as such, as Captain Marvel would still take down Yon Rogg at the end and harness her full potential.

What if Yon Rogg was not a villain?

If Yon Rogg was not a villain, then he would not come to kill Mar-Vell and take Carol under his tutelage, so that he could have used her weapon as a benefit. This would have changed the story of Captain Marvel because then she and Mar-Vell would not have been intercepted and had the plane crash, and Mar-Vell would not have died. This could also mean that Captain Marvel might not have got her powers.

What if Captain Marvel did not meet Nick Fury?

If Carol Danvers did not meet Nick Fury, then the whole scene of visiting the Project Pegasus installation would not have happened. She would have still found out her origin story, some way or the other, but she wouldn’t have been able to give Nick her pager to contact in an emergency. And so, Nick wouldn’t have been able to summon her in ‘Infinity War’, before he withered away into dust.
