‘American Idol’ Season 24 Hollywood Week turns ruthless as only a few singers survive the first major cut
Hollywood Week has returned to ‘American Idol,’ and if you thought the auditions were stressful, well, gear up, because this is where the gloves come off, and the trimming really begins. Season 24 of ‘American Idol’ packed its bags and moved to Nashville this season. And while the address may have changed, the stress? Well, that’s still exactly where it’s always been: in the throats of the contestants. The February 23 episode kicked off the first half of a two-night Hollywood Week event. 127 hopefuls walked in knowing that by the end of the hour, a chunk of them would be heading home with nothing but memories.
The latest episode saw contestants stand in front of a live band, feel the lights on their faces, and convince Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan that they have what it takes to make the Top 30. Some of the contestants appeared to have been waiting their entire lives for this very moment. Madison Moon took the stage and gave a performance that had the judges on the edge of their seats. Braden Rumfelt also impressed, fighting through the nervousness. When the praise started flowing from the panel, you could almost see the relief wash over them. But not everyone found their footing. Hollywood Week has a funny way of revealing flaws with a missed lyric here, an odd arrangement choice there.
A few contestants clearly felt the weight of the moment and couldn’t quite shake off their nerves. By the end of Episode 5, several singers secured their spot in the next round and kept their Top 30 hopes alive. Among those moving forward: Bryant Thomas, Keyla Richardson, Makiyah, Jordan McCullough, Madison Moon, Roelle, Trace Casanova, Hannah Harper, Philmon Lee, Lucas Leon, Kiera Howell, Abayomi, and Michael Garner. Still, the episode wasn’t done playing with viewers’ emotions. In classic competition-show fashion, the hour closed with a cliffhanger. Jake Thistle, Brianna Yancey, and Braden Rumfelt were left hanging in suspense as the credits rolled.
It’s the television equivalent of “to be continued…” and it works every time. On the other side of the coin, several contestants saw their journeys come to an end. Many hopefuls barely received airtime before they disappeared from the lineup. No extended goodbye or farewell speech. However, a handful of departures were highlighted more clearly during the episode. Livy, Vika, Brett Carlisle, Noah Orion, Carmen Lorell Martin, Khloe Grace, and Miyoko were among those whose exits were shown. Meanwhile, Episode 6 is set to air on March 2, and with available spots dwindling, the tension is only going to crank up.
