'Law & Order: SVU' brings back one of its most terrifying villains in season 27 — and we are already on edge
Fans of 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' should brace themselves, because one of the series' most disturbing antagonists is officially making a return. Ethan Cutkosky is set to reprise his chilling role as Henry Mesner, as per Parade. The character has haunted the long-running NBC drama for more than a decade. Cutkosky will once again step into the role of Henry, a character first introduced during SVU's fourteenth season. Viewers initially met Henry in the 2013 episode 'Born Psychopath', where he appeared as a seemingly innocent 10-year-old. That episode shows Henry inflicting harm on his own family and brutally attacking Detective Nick Amaro, portrayed by Danny Pino.
Even at such a young age, Henry proved himself to be one of the show's most unsettling villains. The character resurfaced years later in season 22, reminding audiences that Henry's capacity for violence had only escalated with age. Freshly released from Hesland Juvenile Psychiatric, Henry went on a shocking killing spree that claimed the lives of his father, stepmother, and their child. His crimes didn't stop there. He also violently attacked the daughter of his former psychiatrist, Dr. Blandon, and became a looming threat to Detective Amanda Rollins, played by Kelli Giddish. Now, with the show deep into its 27th season, Henry is coming back once again.
The news was teased on December 12, when the official 'Law & Order' Instagram account shared a brief but chilling video. The clip shows Henry dressed in what appears to be a prison uniform, speaking to Captain Olivia Benson, portrayed by Mariska Hargitay. The caption read, "Catch Ethan Cutkosky guest-starring on SVU soon." It confirmed Cutkosky's upcoming guest appearance, instantly sparking excitement and anxiety among longtime fans. The comments section quickly filled with reactions from viewers who vividly remember Henry's previous reigns of terror. Many expressed equal parts anticipation and dread.
Henry's return arrives during a particularly notable season for 'SVU'. The series, which premiered its 27th season in September, continues to break records as one of television's longest-running scripted dramas. Hargitay recently reflected on that milestone, describing the current season as a period of renewed momentum and creative energy. In an October interview with The TODAY Show, Hargitay shared her excitement about the show's evolving leadership. She said, "It's hard for me to take in that I have been doing the show for 27 years. This year, it has this renewed energy. We have a new showrunner, who is a female showrunner, that I have been waiting for so long."
She described the shift as something she had long hoped for and credited it with bringing a fresh perspective to the series. Hargitay also praised the return of Kelli Giddish, who rejoined the cast this season after departing at the end of season 24. While details about Henry Mesner's upcoming appearance remain under wraps, one thing is certain: when Henry returns to 'Law & Order: SVU', the consequences are never minor. And Benson may once again be facing one of her most dangerous adversaries yet.
