HBO 'We Own This City': Who is ex- Sgt Wayne Jenkins of the GTTF and where is he now?

The season premiere sees Jenkins arrested in the final minutes. The real-life version is now serving his time in a federal prison in Kentucky

Jon Bernthal adds a layer of cockiness to Sergeant Wayne Jenkins, one of the corrupt cops of the Gun Trace Task Force (GTTF), whose rise and fall are charted in HBO's latest ministers 'We Own This City'. The drama starring an ensemble cast and created by the brains behind 'The Wire' is based on Justin Fenton’s 2021 nonfiction book of the same name. The season opener introduces the audience to some of the members of the GTTF with Jenkins leading the pack.

The crime drama sees Bernthal essay the role of Jenkins, his meteoric rise in the city's police department, and his eventual arrest after a two-year federal investigation into the Task Force. After joining the force, Jenkins came under the scanner when he was involved in multiple arrests that resulted in injuries ranging to moderate to severe to the people who he cuffed and put in custody. In Fenton's book, no complaints were added against his name despite the "lies" he would dish out to the jury.

Where is Ex- Sgt Wayne Jenkins now?

Jenkins became part of the GTTF in 2017 — a unit that was tasked in target suspects involved in supplies of arms and drugs. The crackdown would be done by a team that was elite, streetsmart so as to reduce the surging murder rate in the city. While the team looked like a crack unit, the cops went rogue by going against the grain of what they were actually supposed to do. They started tampering with and planting evidence resold the drugs they seized and even took money from the raids they made. A two-year investigation eventually saw eight officers charged with multiple offenses.

According to Newsweek, Jenkins was "charged with two counts of racketeering conspiracy; racketeering, aiding and abetting; racketeering; two counts of robbery and aiding and abetting; and two counts of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence." in February 2017.

Later in November of the same year, more new charges cropped up in the form of falsifying records, deprivation of rights under color of law, and destruction per the media outlet. He pled guilty in 2018 and was sentenced to 25 years in prison and is now serving his time at a Kentucky federal prison. In the season premiere, Jenkins was shown to be arrested in the final minutes but seemed defiant. How the show explores more of Jenkins through Bernthal remains to be seen.

'We Own This City' airs Mondays at 9 pm ET on HBO.
