'American Idol' judge Katy Perry yells at Luke Bryan for criticizing Mia Matthews as she forgets lyrics

SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA: 'American Idol' Season 22 contestant Mia Matthews graced the ABC show stage as she competed for a spot in the Top 8. The aspiring singer notably received a standing ovation from the judges despite she 'messed up' the performance.

During the 'Trip back to Time' episode, Mia chose to perform Shania Twain's hit, 'No One Needs to Know'. Mia was quite nervous during her live performance and she also forgot the lyrics. However, the judges, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie appreciated Mia's effort and awarded her with a standing ovation.

However, the viewers were left furious over the judges' reaction and slammed them for being exceptionally soft. A social media user tweeted, "These judges obviously have favorites he was by far better than Mia and didn't miss any of his words but they praise Mia when she missed half of the words."

Katy Perry shouts at Luke Bryan for criticizing Mia Matthews

'American Idol' judges Katy Perry and Luke Bryan had a fun argument over Mia Matthews' performance. Luke called out Mia for forgetting the words during the performance and Katy chimed in and jokingly yelled at him for "blowing up her spot."

Lionel Richie agreed with Luke that Mia had forgotten the lyrics and pointed out that she felt uncomfortable without her guitar. Meanwhile, Katy tried to lighten the mood by saying that if she had Mia's boyfriend in the crowd, she would try to perform well too.

Shania Twain mentors Mia Matthews

'American Idol' Season 22 aspiring singer Mia Matthews received guidance from guest mentor, Shania Twain. The ABC show contestant notably chose Shania's song to perform during the episode even before she was announced as the guest mentor.

However, Shania pushed Mia to sing the song higher and try singing a harder melody. Mia was excited about receiving the guidance and didn't want to upset Shania.
