Syfy's 'Van Helsing' Season 4 to dive deep into vampire history with Vanessa's ancestor Lillian and family enemy Dracula
Life has never been easy for Vanessa Van Helsing (Kelly Overton). Since her revival in season 1, Vanessa has suffered a lot of tragedy including the loss of her daughter Dylan (Hannah Cheramy) and the sacrifice of her sister Scarlett Harker (Missy Peregrym). In Season 4, Vanessa is going to need all the help she can get as the show will be exploring the depths of vampire lore with the appearance of enemies old and new.
TVLine reported that showrunner Jonathan Walker said in a statement: “Season four will delve deeper into the iconic lore of the vampires and their ultimate goals for this world. New villains will rise along with unexpected heroes joining the fight. We have a fantastic build planned for this season and I’m thrilled to share it with our dedicated fans.”
Luckily, Vanessa may have some much-needed back up with the resurrection of her ancestor Lillian Van Helsing (Julie Lynn Mortensen). Lilly, a vampire hunter from the 1900s and the granddaughter of the legendary Abraham Van Helsing, was killed by a vampire, only to be brought back to life to fight at her descendant's side in the finale of season 3.
Though she appears to be hiding some secrets of her own, Lilly's experience may prove to be an invaluable asset to Vanessa, especially since this season will also be featuring an age-old enemy of the Van Helsing family: the legendary Dracula.
Tricia Helfer ('Battlestar Galactica', 'Lucifer') will be joining the show this season as Dracula. According to Chad Oakes, executive producer and co-chairman of Nomadic Pictures, "She will be a fierce and unstoppable dark one... as the battle between good and evil reaches new heights."
"Being Dracula has been terrifying," Helfer revealed during San Diego Comic-Con 2019. "If I gave too much attention to it, I’d be paralyzed with fear."
Seeing as both Lilly and Dracula will play prominent roles this season, it would appear the season will be focusing a lot on the history of vampires and their rise to power. That said, not everything is going to be about the past as Walker has revealed season 4 will also introduce a few younger characters to the show.
"I was interested in exploring the idea of people who have grown up with this, who didn't have a lifetime of experience before this happened," he told Emmys.com in August. "This is their world, this is what they are dealing with. It's fresh, and it brings a new perspective to the show."
'Van Helsing' Season 4 will premiere on Syfy September 27.
