'True Detective: Night Country' Finale: From Evangeline Navarro's disappearance to Holden's death, 6 mysteries that remain unanswered
Contains spoilers for 'True Detective: Night Country'
ENNIS, ALASKA: Season 4 of HBO's 'True Detective' concluded in Episode 6 aired on February 18, 2024. In the season's finale, the makers unmask the mysteries behind Annie Kowtok's murder and the deaths of scientists.
However, viewers are left unsatisfied as numerous questions remain unanswered. Additionally, the supernatural element introduced in the season hasn't been thoroughly explored, adding to viewer discontent.
How did Liz Danvers' son die?
Throughout the season, we see Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) struggling with nightmares when she sees her dead son, Holden. Even Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) sees him in her visions. Though we assume that he died in a car accident, what happened to him remains a mystery.
In the finale episode, Danvers experiences an emotional breakdown, revealing that he was trapped in a car, hurt, scared, and screaming.
Navarro hints that Holden's ghost is still out there, looking at Danvers.
How did Annie Kowtok's tongue appear six years later?
In the pilot episode of 'True Detective: Night Country', Navarro and Danvers found Annie's tongue at the Tsalal research station. The discovery helps to establish a connection between both cases that have six year of gap between them.
In the finale, we learn that the scientists killed Annie Kowtok ((Nivi Pederson) but they didn't cut her tongue. This leaves us with an assumption that probably Officer Hank Prior (John Hawkes) cut it when he moved the body on the instructions of Kate McKitterick (Dervla Kirwan).
Annie's tongue was never found until the Tsalal case happened after six years.
While it's understood that no supernatural forces claimed the lives of the scientists, the existence of such phenomena cannot be entirely ruled out.
Annie's ghost appears to be present, with a glimpse observed by Navarro while turning up the generator at Tsalal. The research station may be haunted by her ghost.
How did Otis Heiss suffer same injuries as Tsalal researchers?
In the middle of the season, Peter Prior (Finn Bennett) came across the medical records of Otis Heiss, a German national who suffered similar injuries to the researchers, burns on both corneas, ruptured eardrums, and self-inflicted bites, with no explanation of the cause of the accident.
According to Raymond Clark (Owen McDonnell), it was Annie's ghost who killed the scientists. Danvers questions how Otis had injuries similar to researchers given that Annie had not been born.
Despite Danvers' skepticism about the theory of Annie's ghost, Raymond insists that Annie has been a presence throughout time. His statement alludes to Inuit mythology, suggesting a belief that Annie could be an incarnation of Sedna, the deity of the sea.
What is the meaning of spirals?
The mysterious spirals have occurred several times throughout the season. Midway through the season, we learned that the spiral symbol on stones was a warning sign in areas where snow could collapse into ice caves. However, this doesn't suffice their recurrence.
The activist women marked spirals on the researchers' foreheads before abandoning them to die due to the cold. Even the whale fossils on the icy walls displayed spiral shapes.
This also points us in the direction of Inuit mythology where the spiral seems a symbol of fear or devotion towards the Goddess. This would also explain why Rose Aguineau (Fiona Shaw) called it older than the ice and Annie saw it in her dreams and got it tattooed.
Why did the ghost of Travis guide Rose Aguineau to the bodies of researchers?
The season also doesn't explain why the ghost of Travis Cohle (Erling Eliasson) guided Rose to the frozen bodies of researchers.
The appearance of his ghost made fans wonder if Season 4 would turn into a sequel to Season 1. Surprisingly, that didn't happen and makers chose not to address the mystery around Travis' ghost.
What happened to Evangeline Navarro?
When Danvers visits Navarro's house, she finds her gone. However, she leaves behind Holden's teddy bear and Raymond Clark's confession video. A brief glimpse reveals Navarro walking into the ice. It remains uncertain whether she followed the mysterious vision, seeking to reunite with her mother and sister in the realm beyond.
However, reports of her sighting in the town emerge, prompting the theory that her presence holds symbolic significance, justifying the meaning of her Inupiaq name: the return of the sun after a long darkness.
