ENNIS, ALASKA: 'True Detective: Night Country' has managed to keep fans hooked with its engaging plot revolving around the deaths of Tsalal researchers while mysteriously connecting it to the old unsolved murder case of Annie Kowtok (Nivi Pederson).
During the five episodes, the makers didn't give away any hints about the real killer which made the viewers even more excited for the finale episode.
The anthology concluded on Sunday, February 18, as Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) and Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) finally cracked the case.
Raymond Clark reveals the truth behind Annie Kowtok's murder
Evangeline Navarro and Liz Danvers find Raymond Clark (Owen McDonnell) hidden in the ice caves that connect to the Tsalal Research station. After a violent altercation, they are finally able to catch him and torture him by playing Annie's last video on a loop to get his confession.
Raymond reveals that Annie snuck into the research station one night and discovered that the Tsalal station pushed Silver Sky mine to produce more pollutants that would eventually boost the softening of permafrost containing the whale fossil that would apparently help "save the world".
Annie, who was an activist, destroyed the lab in anger and frustration. When the researchers caught her destroying their years of hard work and discoveries, they impulsively stabbed her and killed her without thinking about the consequences.
Raymond, who was in love with her, watched them kill her. However, he wasn't innocent either. Annie survived the stabbing but Raymond did the final act of strangling her to death.
When Navarro questions who cut Annie's tongue, Raymond looks confused and mentions that the scientists didn't do it.
Who cut Annie Kowtok's tongue?
The finale episode reveals that after killing Annie, the scientists asked Silver Sky Mine for help. Kate McKitterick (Dervla Kirwan) sent Hank Prior (John Hawkes) to tackle the situation.
Hank moved Annie's body to the town and he was probably the one who cut her tongue as a sign of warning to the locals that anyone who raises their voice against the mine would be shut down.
Hank agreed to the job because Kate McKitterick had bribed him to conceal evidence surrounding the murder and also promised him the position of Chief.
However, it is still a mystery how Annie's tongue ended up in the Tsalal research lab after six years.
