ENNIS, ALASKA: The mysterious character of Raymond Clark (Owen McDonnell) finally appeared in the concluding episode of 'True Detective: Night Country', exposing the secrets that haunted the town of Ennis.

Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) explored the dangerous ice caves and discovered a secret lab that opened at Tsalal Arctic Research Station. Their expedition leads them to Raymond Clark, who has been missing since Episode 1.

'True Detective: Night Country': Raymond Clark guilty of killing Annie Kowtok

Right from the beginning of this season, Raymond Clark was considered a suspect in the mysterious death case of scientists. He worked as a researcher at Tsalal Research Station and went missing on the night of the mishap.

A deeper look into mysteries helped Liz Danvers tie him to the old unsolved murder case of Annie Kowtok (Nivi Pedersen) as well.

Annie was an activist and shared a romantic relationship with Raymond. She found out that the scientists were not only faking the pollution numbers for Silver Sky Mining but also pushing the company to release more pollutants that would soften the permafrost, thus helping their experiments.

In a rage, Annie destroyed their research lab and years of hard work. The scientists caught her and impulsively stabbed her over 32 times.

Raymond watched them kill her and when he went to cry over her body, Annie showed signs of life. However, he smothered her with his t-shirt.

In his confession to Evangeline Navarro, he lies that he did not kill Annie and continues saying that he loved her.

Raymond Clark froze to death in 'True Detective: Night Country'

Raymond is convinced that it was Annie who returned as a ghost to take revenge. He told Danvers and Navarro that he hid for a week under the hatch to the lab.

He believes that Annie is an incarnation of Sedna, the deity of the Sea (as per Inuit mythology). He said, “She’s been hiding in those caves", while further adding, “Before she was born, after we all die: Time is a flat circle. And we are all stuck in it.”

After the interrogation, Raymond is so guilt-ridden that he begs Navarro to either kill him or let him do it himself. Later, when the power at the research station goes out, we see Raymond Clark on the ice, frozen to death.

Keeping in mind Navarro's history of taking the law into her own hands, we can infer that Navarro intentionally let him loose, knowing that he would take his own life.

'True Detective: Night Country' is currently streaming on Max.
