'Top Gun: Maverick' shatters viewership record, becomes most-streamed movie of all time on Paramount+
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 2022 turned out to be the most extraordinary year for Tom Cruise and gave him the highest-grossing movie of his professional career in the form of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. The movie, which serves as a legacy sequel to 1986 original ‘Top Gun’, sees Cruise reprising the role of Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell as he is given the responsibility of training the best of ‘Top Gun’ graduates for a mission that has never been done before. Fans were in awe of how Cruise was still able to do things that other might not even think about and didn’t shy away from watching the movie multiple times. However, the movie is in no mood to stop at all and has achieved another massive milestone before 2022 comes to an end.
There is no doubt that ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is the biggest movie of 2022 and did exceptionally well at the box office. Cruise took the decision not to release the movie on a streaming platform until its theatrical run came to an end because it is meant to be seen on the biggest screen possible. Now that the movie has finally made its way to Paramount+, it has started to reign supreme there as well, giving an indication that the theatre-only original run won’t stop people from tuning in to the streaming platform.

'Top Gun: Maverick' Review: Tom Cruise delivers an exhilarating sequel filled with nostalgia
According to Deadline, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ has gone on to shatter viewing records for the streaming platform and has already become the most-streamed title of all time for Paramount+. The report suggests that the movie flew past ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ to achieve that coveted feat and surpassed the weekend viewership record by 60%. However, it is worth noticing that Paramount did not reveal how many people have watched the movie on the streaming service. ‘Maverick’ was not the film that enjoyed such an amazing weekend in the world of streaming, other Tom Cruise movies such as ‘Top Gun’ and the ‘Mission: Impossible’ series also saw a huge jump in viewership on Paramount+.
This is another feather in Tom Cruise’s cap and will be happy to know that fans still want to have that level of experience in their homes as well. Released in May 2022, the movie had a lot of pressure to perform well because it was a passion project for Cruise as well as Jerry Bruckheimer and Joseph Kosinski. It received a lot of praise initially when the film was screened by a few critics at this year’s CinemaCon in April. As soon as the movie was released in theatres, fans didn’t leave any stone unturned to watch ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ on the biggest screen possible and saw the movie having full houses even in its fifth and sixth weeks. As a result, it became the first movie of 2022 to cross $1 billion globally and ended its theatrical run with earnings of $1.48 billion.
Apart from being so successful at the box office, the film is being touted as the frontrunner in several categories at the Academy Awards and has already been nominated for accolades at other award ceremonies. The title has been nominated for six trophies at the Critics’ Choice Awards, including Best Picture. On the other hand, it has landed a Best Picture nom at the next year’s Golden Globes.
National Board of Review named ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ the best movie of 2022 while the American Film Institute also included it in the list of Top 10 movies.
‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is currently available for streaming on Paramount+.
