Movies to watch out for in 2020: 'Birds of Prey', 'Black Widow', 'The Eternals' and more

Finally, it's time your patience pays off, 2020 is almost here and so are the most anticipated movies of the year. Right from the return of James Bond, the Kingsman, and Wonder Woman to Black Widow and A Quiet Place 2, 2020 is going to be a year bursting with great movies.

Like A Boss (Jan 10) 



 

Director: Miguel Arteta

Cast: Tiffany Haddish, Rose Byrne, Salma Hayek

Plot: Two female friends who have totally different ideals decide to start a beauty company. While one is practical, the other wants to live a lavish lifestyle by earning a fortune. But things take a turn when their benefactor begins to steal from them. 

Bad Boys For Life (Jan 17) 



 

Director: Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah

Cast:  Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig

Plot:  Marcus Burnett and Mike Lowery are not the duo they used to be. Burnett has become a police inspector while Lowery gets assigned to lead a special ops group called "AMMO", consisting of cops from a generation he has nothing in common with. However, Burnett and Lowery are forced to team up again just as they were about to officially retire when a fierce Romanian mob boss -- whose brother they defeated long ago -- seeks revenge on Lowery.

The Rhythm Section (Jan 31)

Cast:  Blake Lively, Jude Law, Sterling K. Brown

Plot: The Rhythm Section is an international spy thriller that revolves around the story of Stephanie Patrick, a woman who is on a mission to uncover the truth behind a plane crash that killed her family three years ago. After Stephanie who was also supposed to be on the same flight discovers that the crash was not an accidental one, she goes on a mission to find out who was responsible for the crash by assuming the identity of an assassin.

Birds of Prey (Feb 7)



 

Director: Cathy Yan

Cast: Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell

Plot: After the events of the Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn leaves Joker.  Gotham City turns upside down when Roman Sionis / Black Mask, a narcissistic crime lord threatens a young girl named Cassandra Cain. Harley then joins  Black Canary, Huntress, and Renee Montoya to protect Cassandra and take the Black Mask down. 

The Call of the Wild (Feb 21) 



 

Director: Chris Sanders

Cast: Harrison Ford, Dan Stevens, Omar Sy, Karen Gillan, Bradley Whitford, Colin Woodell

Plot: A domesticated St. Bernard/Scotch Collie dog named Buck gets stolen from his home in Santa Clara, California and is sold to freight haulers in the Yukon. 

A Quiet Place 2 (March 20)

Director: John Krasinski

Cast: Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe, John Krasinski

Plot: After the success of A Quiet Place 1, the sequel is all set to return next year for another scary and thrilling movie that will have us sitting at the edge of our seats. 

The New Mutants ( April 3)



 

Director: Josh Boone 

Cast:  Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt, Alice Braga

Plot: Five young mutants discover their powers and strengths when held captive in a secret facility. They fight to escape their sins from the past and to save themselves. 

No Time To Die ( April 8)

Director: Cary Joji Fukunaga

Cast: Daniel Craig, Rami Malek, Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris

Plot: After James Bond leaves the active service, his friend Felix Leiter, the CIA officer calls him back to help search for a scientist who has gone missing. After it becomes clear that scientist was indeed abducted, Bond must now come face to face with danger, unlike something the world has seen before. 

Black Widow (May 1) 

Director: Cate Shortland 

Cast:  Scarlett Johansson, David Harbour, Florence Pugh, O-T Fagbenle, Rachel Weisz, Ray Winstone, William Hurt

Plot: Post the events of Captain America: Civil War, Natasha Romanoff is forced to confront her past after she finds herself alone.

Greyhound (May 8) 

Director: Aaron Schneider 

Cast: Tom Hanks, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Elisabeth Shue, Rob Morgan, Stephen Graham

Plot: The movie focuses on Commander Ernest Krause who led an international convoy of 37 Allied ships across the treacherous North Atlantic during the early days of the US' involvement in World War II. Krause is finally given the command of a destroyer USS Greyhound. Unlike the usual heroes, he must fight against his own self-doubts and personal demons to prove he deserves to stay alongside the conflict with the enemy.

Scoob! (May 15) 



 

Director: Tony Cervone

Cast: Frank Welker, Will Forte, Zac Efron, Amanda Seyfried, Gina Rodriguez, Jason Isaacs, Tracy Morgan, Kiersey Clemons, Ken Jeong, Mark Wahlberg

Plot: The movie revolves around how Scooby-Doo, on how he met Shaggy, Fred, Daphne and Velma and how the group formed Mystery Inc.,. The movie also showcases how they face their biggest challenge: to summon Cerberus the ghost dog. 

Artemis Fowl (May 29) 



 

Director: Kenneth Branagh

Cast: Ferdia Shaw, Lara McDonnell, Nonso Anozie, Tamara Smart, Hong Chau, Josh Gad, Judi Dench

Plot: Artemis Fowl is based on the book of the same name by Eoin Colfer. The movie revolves around the journey of a 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl who is a descendant of a long line of criminal masterminds as he sets out to find his father who disappeared mysteriously. 

Wonder Woman 1984 (June 5)

Cast:  Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright

Plot: According to Warner Bros. Pictures the official plot for the movie is, "Diana Prince comes into conflict with the Soviet Union during the Cold War in the 1980s and finds a formidable foe by the name of the Cheetah." 

Candyman (June 12)

Director: Nia DaCosta

Cast:  Tony Todd, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris

Plot: Candyman is a 'spiritual sequel' to the 1992 horror film that is now back to its gentrified Chicago neighborhood where the legend started. 

Top Gun: Maverick (June 26) 



 

Director: Joseph Kosinski 

Cast:  Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, Val Kilmer

Plot: After the success of the first movie back again for Top Gun: Maverick, a new generation of U.S. Navy fighter pilots gets mentored by Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. 

Tenet (July 17)

Director: Christopher Nolan

Cast:  John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clémence Poésy, Himesh Patel, Michael Caine, Kenneth Branagh

Plot: There is no plot revealed for the forthcoming movie, but it is described as an action epic revolving around international espionage, time travel, and evolution. 

Morbius (July 31) 

Director: Daniel Espinosa 

Cast: Jared Leto, Matt Smith, Tyrese Gibson, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris

Plot: Trying to cure himself of a rare blood disease Biochemist Michael Morbius instead inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism. 

The One and Only Ivan (Aug 14) 

Director: Thea Sharrock

Cast:  Sam Rockwell, Angelina Jolie, Bryan Cranston, Ramón Rodríguez, Brooklynn Prince, Ariana Greenblatt, Danny DeVito, Helen Mirren

Plot: A gorilla named Ivan lives in a cage at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade with Stella an aging elephant and Bob a dog who have no idea how they got there. Mack, the owners of the Big Top Mall owns them. An abused baby elephant named Ruby shows up and is taken under Stella's trunk along with Ivan taking care of her. The janitors' daughter Julia also helps out to turn things around at the mall. 

Bill & Ted Face the Music (Aug 21) 

Director: Dean Parisot

Cast:  Keanu Reeves, Alex Winter, William Sadler, Brigette Lundy-Paine, Samara Weaving, Kid Cudi, Anthony Carrigan

Plot: William "Bill" S. Preston, Esq. and Theodore "Ted" Logan get a visitor from the future and is warned about the need for them to create a song that will save all life on Earth and the entire universe. They work with their family, friends and other famous musicians to succeed in the task. 

The King's Man (Sept 18) 



 

Director: Matthew Vaughn

Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Harris Dickinson, Gemma Arterton, Tom Hollander

Plot: After a troupe of history's worst criminal masterminds and tyrants come together and plan a war to get rid of millions, one man and his apprentice must go against time and stop them. 

The Eternals (Nov 6)

Director: Chloé Zhao

Cast:  Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh, Don Lee, Barry Keoghan, Gemma Chan, Kit Harington

Plot: Created by Jack Kirby in 1976, the comic book 'Eternals' is set millions of years in the past, when the cosmic beings known as the Celestials genetically experimented on humans to create super-powered individuals known as the Eternals, along with the villainous Deviants. The two groups battled each other throughout history. The Eternals also warred with Greek, Roman and Norse deities before leaving Earth to explore the stars.

Godzilla vs Kong (Nov 20) 

Director: Adam Wingard

Cast: Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall

Plot: The official plot synopsis for Godzilla vs Kong is, "In a time when monsters walk the Earth, humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course that will see the two most powerful forces of nature on the planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages. As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain and unearths clues to the Titans’ origins, a human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever." 

Dune (Dec 18)

Director: Denis Villeneuve

Cast:  Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Chang Chen, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem

Plot: Based on Frank Herbert's iconic novel of the same name, 'Dune' is set in the distant future of humanity, Duke Leto Atreides is assigned to govern the dangerous desert planet Arrakis, the only source of the most valuable substance in the universe: a drug known as "the spice" that extends human life and enhances mental capabilities. Leto knows this is a set up by his enemies, the Harkonnens. But, he takes Lady Jessica, his concubine and a follower of the Bene Gesserit, and their young son and heir, Paul, as well as his most trusted advisors to Arrakis, which is also known as Dune. Leto takes control of the space mining operation while facing the dangers presented by giant sandworms. However, Leto is betrayed by his personal physician leading Paul and Jessica to the Fremen -- the natives of Arrakis who live in the deep desert -- and have to start seeing them as allies to survive.
