‘Tommy’ Episode 6 raises questions if the series will be renewed for season 2 or cancelled

As we are halfway through the first season of the crime drama procedural, we speculate if the show would see another season and if not, then what are the possibilities

After six weeks and six episodes of the brand new primetime series, it’s time to think about its future. When the series opened about a month ago, it garnered immense popularity among viewers, resulting in a lot of conversations on Twitter and other social media platforms. And one of the primary reasons for such hype was Edie Falco herself. The network television veteran is a name and a face to reckon with.

With awards like Golden Globes and Emmy in her kitty, her presence itself can boost a show’s popularity. And it did! Fans on Twitter went gaga about her character when the show started airing. Abigail Thomas, the first female chief of LAPD, turned out to be an epitome of the woman of today; a personality that every aspiring female professional would strive to be.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series managed to score an approval rating of 65%, averaging at an overall rating of 5.67 out of 10. In the first few weeks itself, the primetime show attracted about 4.64 million viewers. The reasons as exactly what we cited above. However, as the series kept progressing, it started losing out on viewers and people reviewed the show with “mixed or average reviews”.

As we also observed, fans on social media also held themselves back from reacting to the characters, story, or the developments thereof.

While we are still wondering what could be the reason/s for such drop in popularity, there’s a more pressing question to be answered. With the first season nearing its end soon, will there be another season or should we consider this to be the end of the nighttime crime drama?

With the current reception of the show, it appears that there might be chances (though remote) that it will not be renewed for an all-new second season. If that happens, then we will surely miss Edie Falco and her team of LAPD’s finest. Also, we would expect a closure of the characters and their stories within the first season itself. But one can never say, if the crime procedural will suddenly pick up pace towards the fag end of season one, prompting the network to give a green signal to season 2.

‘Tommy’ Season 1 airs every Thursday night at 10pm/9c, only on CBS.
