'This is Us' Season 4 Episode 3: Deja learns the truth about Malik while Kevin meets Cass and their bumpy love story begins
Season four episode two of 'This is Us' took us back to the roots, with the stories of the big three, all struggling to keep up with the new normals in their lives.
With Kate (Chrissy Metz) learning to be a new mom to a visually challenged son, Randall (Sterling K Brown) learning to adjust to the Philly life, and Kevin (Justin Hartley) learning to stay sober, their lives are all too chaotic even as Rebecca (Mandy Moore) reminisces about the past.
The episode also sets up what is going to happen in Kevin and Deja's (Lyric Ross) lives in the coming episodes.
We saw how Uncle Nicky (Griffin Dunne) had got into a little bit of trouble at the vet center and put Kevin's name for bail money, but now he is refusing to let his nephew know how he is doing.
Towards the end of episode two, we saw Kevin going to the center and present Nicky with his ficus plant — the same plant which gave him a sense of control during the initial days of his sobriety.
It seems like Kevin is staying back to try and help him out, during the course of which he befriends Cass' (Jennifer Morrison) son and through him, Cass.
We had always guessed that their stories would intertwine in some way, especially since she is a veteran, and now, we get to see it unfolding. She may become the woman Kevin raises his children with, in the future.
Meanwhile, we also see Deja and Malik's (Asante Blackk) story take shape after they meet at a barbecue party hosted by a common friend in the series premiere.
Last episode we saw another tender moment between the two when Deja sneakily takes a photo of Malik from the bus as he was working on a car with his father.
From their interactions, it is clear that they are both interested, but Deja is yet to learn about Malik's secret — he is a teenage dad.
We see that Malik is trying his best to give his daughter the best that life can offer, and she will always come first for him. It remains to be seen how Deja will respond to this revelation, and more importantly, how the overprotective Randall will react to their relationship.
