'The Weekend Away' Review: Leighton Meester gives a fine performance in solid Netflix whodunnit

Leighton Meester took the world by storm with ‘Gossip Girl’. The series made her a superstar and since then, we have seen her showing her acting prowess in several other projects. The actress is set to enthrall viewers once again with the upcoming thriller movie, ‘The Weekend Away’.

Based on the novel of the same name by Sarah Alderson, the movie revolves around two friends Beth (Meester) and Kate (Christina Wolfe) as they decide to have a vacation in Croatia. They were planning to do a lot of sightseeing and enjoy their hearts out. However, things go upside down when Beth gets to know that Kate has vanished. At first, she thought she went with the guys they met at the bar, but she gets really nervous when there is no trace of her friend.

As the movie progresses, it turns out that her friend is dead and now Beth is being accused of killing her friend because it seems they had a fight while leaving the bar. She embarks on a journey to prove her innocence. However, each clue yields another unsettling deception. The best thing about the movie is that it manages to take you on a journey that is suspenseful and will keep on challenging you to find who actually killed Kate. The screenplay is crisp and keeps you hooked.

The movie feels like an exhilarating ride where nothing is what it seems and you will feel like you have solved the mystery, but the script keeps on surprising you with more and more secrets. It’s fast-moving and efficiently told.

As far as acting is concerned, Leighton Meester takes your heart away with a superb performance. She never lets her guard down even when she knows that her character is in deep trouble. Meester shows why she is such a bright talent and why she should not be written off. It’s undoubtedly one of her finest performances.

Meanwhile, Christina Wolfe has also done a phenomenal job as Kate. Yes, her character seemed to be annoying at first and you’ll hate her for what she does to Beth, but Christina manages to woo everyone away with a performance that’s worth applauding. Another actor who did a superb job is none other than Ziad Bakri. The Palestinian actor had a pivotal role to play in the movie and he surely did that to precision.

Luke Norris and Adrian Pezdirc have done an excellent job in their respective roles as well.

Adapting a novel for the big screen is never easy and a lot of people will bash the makers for not including their favorite part in the movie. However, ‘The Weekend Away’ doesn’t seem to have that problem. Every situation you see on the screen has been carefully picked to make you feel excited and emotional as well.

All in all, the captivating screenplay and the right amount of twists and turns make this whodunnit a great watch.
