'The Walking Dead' season 10: Release date, plot, cast, trailer, and everything you need to know about AMC zombie horror

Much like the devastating Rick Grimes goodbye in season 9, this season might be the last time you see Michonne. As for our beloved Maggie, her return is yet to be confirmed.

The Walking Dead sans Rick Grimes might not be an idea most fans would like to fathom, but here we are. A brand new season 10 is on its way, as had been announced by AMC earlier this year, and taking to this year's San Diego Comic-Con, the cast and showrunners of the longstanding zombie apocalypse drama spilled all the recent updates regarding season 10.

The show's lead character, Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), won't be a part of the tenth season, but worry not - there's clearly more stories to tell about the titular walking dead, aka zombies, and man's struggle to survive in a dystopian world where they rule. Here's all you need to know about season 10 of 'The Walking Dead'.

Release date:

Season 10 of 'The Walking Dead' premieres on Sunday, October 6, at  9 p.m. only on AMC.

Plot

The official synopsis of the show describes it as "the story of the months and years that follow after a zombie apocalypse. It follows a group of survivors, led by former police officer Rick Grimes, who travel in search of a safe and secure home." While season 9 saw the exit of Rick, the showrunners have confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that season 10 will go on without him and explore the 'cold war' between the communities and the new villains, the Whisperers. Tensions rose from the border that was breached by Alpha last season, and the rest of season 10 will encompass the aftermath of that.

Creator

The series is adapted from an American post-apocalyptic comic book series created by writer Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. Kirkman also serves as executive producer of the TV series which was adapted from the comic by Frank Darabont, who also served as the showrunner for the first season. Darabont and AMC's conflicts led to his departure from the role, which has seen been filled by Glen Mazzara, Scott M. Gimple, and Angela Kang. Kang is the current showrunner.

Cast

(L-R) Angela Kang, Danai Gurira, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Cailey Fleming, Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Avi Nash, Ryan Hurst, Nadia Hilker, Eleanor Matsuura and Cooper Andrews speak at "The Walking Dead" Panel during 2019 Comic-Con International at San Diego Convention Center on July 19, 2019 in San Diego, California.

All surviving cast members are expected to return, with Norman Reedus' Daryl Dixon and Melissa McBride's Carol Peletier running the forefront. Danai Gurira, who has been a series regular from the start, will reprise her role as Michonne for the tenth and sadly, final time. The actress confirmed the news with teary eyes at Comic-Con 2019. Dante, a character from the original comics, will also make it to the screen this time, but the actor playing him hasn't been revealed yet. Kang has also revealed that Lauren Cohan is in talks to reprise her role of Maggie, who left with Lincoln's Grimes in season 9, but reportedly, she shouldn't be expected to return any time in the initial stages.

Trailer

This year's Comic-Con also saw the release of the official season 10 trailer of 'The Walking Dead'. There's fear, there's conspiracy, and of course - there is the signature blood and gore that the show has been known for since the beginning. Check it out here:
