The upcoming Netflix series revolves around a blended family full of different personalities and different life struggles. Trying to avoid mistakes of the past, the family’s patriarch steps up to the mantle by becoming a better husband and father to his amazing family.

With the presence of icons like Mike Epps and Wanda Sykes, the show is undoubtedly going to be one of the highly-anticipated shows of the year. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming comedy series.

Release date

‘The Upshaws’ will be premiering exclusively on Netflix on Wednesday, May 12. 

Air time and how to live stream

According to the Netflix press site, the show will air in the US at 3 am ET. Subscribe to Netflix directly, via a mobile app store (App Store, Google Play). You can also watch it by signing up for the platform’s free trial. Apart from that, viewers can also opt for different subscription plans provided by the streaming giant. A premium plan that allows more people to watch the service on different screens simultaneously, costs $18 per month. Meanwhile, the basic US plan costs $9 per month.

Plot

The official synopsis reads, “Bennie Upshaw (Mike Epps), the head of a Black working class family in Indianapolis, is a charming, well-intentioned mechanic and lifelong mess just trying his best to step up and care for his family — wife Regina (Kim Fields), their two young daughters (Khali Daniya-Renee Spraggins, Journey Christine) and firstborn son (Jermelle Simon), the teenage son (Diamond Lyons) he fathered with another woman (Gabrielle Dennis) -- and tolerate his sardonic sister-in-law (Wanda Sykes), all without a blueprint for success. But the Upshaws are determined to make it work, and make it to the next level, together.” 

Cast

Mike Epps

One of the most iconic names in Hollywood, Mike Epps will be playing the role of Bennie Shaw on the upcoming Netflix show. Epps started his career as a stand-up comedian in the early 90s and garnered a lot of praise for his performances. Apart from being an actor, the star also has good experience in producing numerous TV shows and movies.

Wanda Sykes

Wanda Sykes stars in ‘The Upshaws’ as Lucretia Turner. The multi-talented actress needs little introduction. She is the recipient of numerous accolades, including, a Primetime Emmy and a BET Comedy Award. Sykes gained a lot of prominence for her writing on ‘The Chris Rock Show’. Besides this, she has also played notable roles in projects such as ‘Monster-in-Law’, ‘Over The Hedge’, ‘License to Wed’, ‘Black-ish’ and more.

Creators

The series is co-created by Regina Hicks and Wanda Sykes. Meanwhile, the duo also serves as executive producers alongside Mike Epps, Page Hurwitz, and Niles Kirchner.
