'The Umbrella Academy' Season 3 on Netflix: Critics give thumbs up to most 'emotional season yet'
In 2019, Netflix introduced the world to a new team of superhero siblings that could go back in time and change the course of the world by defeating evil forces through their superpowers. The first season of 'The Umbrella Academy' turned out to be very popular among young adults and became one of the most-watched shows on the streaming platform. Meanwhile, the second season yielded better results and received universal acclaim. So, it didn’t come as a shock that Netflix renewed it for Season 3 as well.
Season 3 of the acclaimed Netflix series is just around the corner and it will be fascinating to see how the Hargreeves siblings tackle their biggest threat yet: a kugelblitz. The series revolves around superhero siblings that have just returned from 1963 after assuming that they prevented the initial apocalypse and fixed the timeline. However, when they return to the present timeline, they get to know that things aren’t exactly how they left them. Apart from that, the Umbrella Academy will also deal with new challengers this around and they are called the ‘Sparrow Academy’, which is led by Ben Hargreeves (Justin H. Min).

The upcoming season has already created a lot of buzz and generated positive reviews from the critics. Season 3 currently has a rating of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes. The series received thumbs up in every aspect, especially Elliott Page’s acting. However, the reviews did suggest that viewers would have to be patient with the series because it takes some time to gather steam, but when it does, it takes the viewers on a thrilling ride.
Alex Stedman of IGN wrote that if viewers hang in there through a “few slower” initial episodes, they’ll be rewarded with “Umbrella Academy-flavored fun”. On the other hand, Danielle Ryan of Slash Film said that Season 3 makes baffling decisions with some character arcs and keeps viewers at the edge of their seats. In his review, he wrote, “After a shaky first season, the series found its footing in season 2, focusing on the chemistry between its stellar cast and leaning into the weirdness. Season 3 is a frustrating mix of both, delivering exceptional arcs for certain characters while making baffling decisions with others, leading to an experience that feels sort of like eating those gag jelly beans: it’s impossible to tell whether the next scene is going to be piña colada or vomit flavored.”
Nate Richard from Collider wrote, “Season 3 blends together the moodiness of Season 1 with the brisk-pacing, bizarro nature, and enormous heart of Season 2.”
Apart from praising the emotional depth of the upcoming season, critics hailed Elliott Page’s performance and called her the best part of the series. While appreciating his performance, Jenna Scherer of AV Club wrote, “The show deftly handles the conversations Viktor has with each of his family members about his transition, as well as showcases the way he comes into his own throughout the season. He becomes a wiser, wryer, and more confident person, a far cry from the frustratingly weak and underwritten Vanya we met at the beginning of the series.”
On the other hand, Slash Film praised how the “transition and life” as a trans-man has been handled in the show.
The reviews have been glaring as of now and going by the trend, it seems the next round of reviews might be positive as well.
‘The Umbrella Academy’ also stars Aidan Gallagher (Five Hargreeves), Tom Hopper (Luther), David Castaneda (Diego), Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison), Robert Sheehan (Klaus), and Justin H. Min (Ben Hargreaves).
Season 3 of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ will be premiering exclusively on Wednesday, June 22.
