There is hardly any doubt HBO's latest drama 'The Third Day' is as twisted and haunting that a tale can get. At least one can decipher this from the first looks of the trailer.

Starring Jude Law, Katherine Waterston, Paddy Considine, Emily Watson, Naomie Harris, John Dagleish, Nico Parker and Freya Allan, 'The Third Day' packs a punch of horror, thrill, suspense, and drama. We follow a man named Sam, played by Law and a woman, Helen (Harris) who arrive on the mysterious island of Osea at different times of the year.

Unbeknownst to them, the island hides within itself dark secrets that are likely to mess with your heads. The locals from the island have a strange manner to themselves and behave in the creepiest of ways one can imagine -- fueling fear and paranoia. The official synopsis of the miniseries states that "as boundaries between fantasy and reality fragment, his [Sam's (Jude Law)] quest to unlock the truth leads the islanders to reveal a shocking secret." Are Sam and Helen destined to uncover the long-hidden secrets of this world? Or, as outsiders on the island, are they dispensable to the locals?

'The Third Day' is created by writer Dennis Kelly and Felix Barrett, and directed by Marc Munden, who takes charge of the first three episodes -- an installment titled 'Summer' -- and Philippa Lowthorpe, who directs the next three episodes categorized as 'Winter'. A bridge between these two seasons is 'Fall', which is going to be filmed live and is described as a "major immersive theatre event." This episode will premiere the Saturday between 'Summer' and 'Winter'. Apparently, this live episode is set to air in one continuous take and is intended to allow the audiences to "inhabit the story as it happens."

There is a lot of mention of pain and misery in the trailer. It could be assumed that those who arrive on the island are going through some kind of pain and suffering through some trauma. But how much of it is reality, and how much is fiction? In an interview, Harris teased that 'The Third Day "gets pretty bloody, it's quite violent…".

The limited series will premiere on HBO on Monday, September 14, 2020, at 9-10 pm ET/PT and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
