'The Sandman' has been garnering buzz for some time now and adding to it is the show star Jenna Coleman who plays Johanna Constantine in Netflix's upcoming adaptation sharing her thoughts on how her character differs from John Constantine. The first season starring Tom Sturridge as Dream is all set to hit the streamer this August.

Coleman, in an interview with Screen Rant, spoke about her role as Johanna Constantine — one of the characters appearing in the original Sandman comics and is the 18th-century ancestor of John Constantine. She suggested that her version had the essence of John. "Allan Heinberg was very keen on [how] this is Johanna Constantine upgraded," she explained. "This is now Johanna Constantine who is an exorcist to the royal family. She's earning money, she's doing well for herself. She's at the top of her game. But in terms of essence, [she's a] roguish, dry cynic, but really this kind of wounded lone warrior. The essence is very much there. We're just meeting her at a different time."

An in-depth look at her character shows Coleman bearing a similar approach to John, with the trademark trenchcoat and also being cynical in her own way, just like John was. While there will be some major differences, it shouldn't come as a surprise if Johanna shares some of the traits of the magician.

The official synopsis reads, "A rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama, and legend are seamlessly interwoven, The Sandman follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic — and human — mistakes he’s made during his vast existence.” Starring alongside Sturridge and Coleman is Gwendoline Christie who plays Lucifer Morningstar, the Devil. David Thewlis (Landscapers), Sanjeev Bhaskar (Unforgotten), Asim Chaudry (People Just Do Nothing), Kirby Howell-Baptiste (The Good Place), Stephen Fry (It’s A Sin), and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) add to the list as well.

'The Sandman' premieres August 5 on Netflix.
