'The Lovebirds': Release date, plot, cast, trailer and all you need to know about Netflix's romantic thriller flick

'The Lovebirds' was originally set for an April release in theatres, but given the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent global lockdown that led to the theatres shutting across the world, the movie is now releasing on Netflix. The romantic thriller sees Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani as a couple who find themselves embroiled in a murder mystery with no way out. Or is there?

Here is everything you need to know about the movie coming to Netflix. 

Release date

'The Lovebirds' will premiere on Netflix on May 22, 2020. 

Plot

The official synopsis states: "A couple experiences a defining moment in their relationship when they are unintentionally embroiled in a murder mystery. As their journey to clear their names takes them from one extreme — and hilarious — circumstance to the next, they must figure out how they, and their relationship, can survive the night."

Issa Rae

Rae garnered widespread attention and acclaim for her work on 'Awkward Black Girl'. She created, co-wrote and starred in the HBO series 'Insecure'. Her acting chops earned her two Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Actress — Television Series Musical or Comedy — and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

Kumail Nanjiani

Nanjiani doesn't require any introduction. The actor rose to prominence with his role as Dinesh on 'Silicon Valley'. She starred in 'The Big Sick', which he co-wrote with his wife Emily V Gordon. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. He is set to play the role of Kingo Sunen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film 'The Eternals'.

Showalter directs 'The Lovebirds'. He had previously worked with Nanjiani on the romantic comedy 'The Big Sick'. The writer and director is known for co-creating the 'Wet Hot American Summer' franchise. He also co-wrote and starred in 'Wet Hot American Summer'. 

'The Lovebirds' features a screenplay from Aaron Abrams and Brendan Gall.

At first, 'The Lovebirds' looks like any other romance movie that Netflix has to offer. But it is really a thriller murder mystery wrapped inside a romantic offering by Showalter. As we follow Nanjiani and Rae on their adventure, we must wait to find out if their relationship can survive this madness.
