'The Good Fight' star Nyambi Nyambi decodes Memo 618 and reveals show's secrets and conspiracy theories
'The Good Fight' is back for its fourth season and its first episode leaves quite an impression. Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) wakes up to a world where Donald Trump lost the presidency to Hillary Clinton. In an exclusive interview with MEA WorldWide (MEAWW), Nyambi Nyambi — who plays Jay Dipersia on the series — talks about that episode, the season ahead and what else is going on in his life.
In the first episode of the new season, we take a look at what things would have been like if Hillary Clinton had won the election instead of Donald Trump. How do you feel about how that episode was done? How realistic do you think it was?
You know I come from a world of comic books in terms of my extra-curricular interests. And it just reminds me of an 'Elseworlds' comic or, a 'What if...?' comic. 'Elseworlds' being DC and then 'What if...?' being Marvel. But it's that thing — you change one thing, and how does that affect everything? In many ways it's good but then in other ways it's bad. But you don't know — what do you sacrifice to have the other is the question, really. And it's sort of like there's Earth-1, Earth-2, Earth-3, Earth-99 and it almost feels like on one Earth, this is what it would be. You know, speaking in comic terms. It could be an infinite number of ways it could go down when you change one little thing.
Speaking of comic books, are there any plans for you to return to the Martian Manhunter role anytime soon?
Man, I'm hoping. I really hope so. In fact I'm going to reach out and just remind them, hey, I'm raring to go. I'm excited to continue playing John Jones so we'll see.
So what is the good fight for Jay in Season 4. What is he fighting for?
In a lot of ways, because of this new company has taken on our law firm I think Jay is trying to find his position there, in terms of his role there. Because they are a whole 'nother beast being this parent company now. And it's just like, "Well what's my role here? How do I fit in?" And that's something that we are all trying to figure out.
Does this bigger firm change the way Jay approaches his job?
Yeah. One of my favorite quotes or favorite things that I like to say about the character comes from this documentary I saw with Jimmy Breslin and Pete Hamill. Pete was talking about how everyone has a public life, a private life and a secret life. Public life, of course, is for everyone's consumption. The private life, it's for those who are invitation only — that's what he said. And the secret life is nobody's business. I think (Jay's) starting to go a little bit more towards the secret route just because he's dealing with a whole lot of secrets that are happening around the firm. All the characters are, "So what is Memo 618?" We have to actually now operate in silence in order to figure out what this is because it's affecting everybody, affecting our cases.
Are there any other projects that are coming up for you that we should be keeping an eye out for?
There's a couple of things that I shot that I'm not sure when they will actually come together. I shot a film with Billy Crystal and Tiffany Haddish but I'm not sure when that will come out. I have to check in on that. But other than that, I'm spending this break drawing and developing and writing and seeing what creative endeavors come out of this.
Do you have a place people can find you online?
Yes, you can find me. I'm on Twitter and on Instagram @nyambi. I'll be sharing my artwork there. I'm watching a movie a day. So I'll be sharing the movie of the day that I'm watching. And then I read a comic a day. So I'm going to be sharing the comics that I'm reading as well.
You can find Nyambi Nyambi on Twitter and Instagram. The film he is referring to with Billy Crystal is called 'Here Today'. You can see Nyambi's next appearance on 'The Good Fight' April 16, on CBS All-Access.
