Spoiler alert Season 4 Episode 5 of 'The Bold Type' titled 'Tearing Down The Donut Wall'

It is difficult to believe in the magic of weddings. The big day is a grand affair of glamour and splendor fused with fantasy and faith. But what happens after that? What happens after you walk down the aisle and exchange your vows promising a forever and more to each other?

Episode 5 of Season 4 of 'The Bold Type' opens with an exploration into weddings, millennial weddings and traditional weddings but ends with a note on marriages.

With Sutton Brady's (Meghann Fahy) wedding preparations underway, Jane Sloan (Katie Stevens) pitches to work on an exclusive story on weddings - an in-depth analysis of millennial weddings, how they plan it, what goes into the main day versus traditional weddings. There are plans decided for every vertical of the edition. Always looking for the personal angle, Jane asks around from those closest to her about their wedding day. When she finally approaches her editor-in-chief Jacqueline Carlyle (Melora Hardin), she is expecting the interview to go well, and it does, till Jacqueline gets an international call from her husband Ian (Gildart Jackson) that is accidentally recorded on Jane's phone.

Jane now finds out that everything magical Jacqueline told her about her wedding day, doesn't exactly equate to the marriage she has been living with Ian - an unhappy one. But Jane doesn't approach the subject anymore, in fact, she even refuses to write the in-depth piece she had pitched. Instead, she submits a listicle that has Jacqueline really disappointed, which is when the cat is out of the bag.

Jacqueline's marriage with Ian has been on the rocks for a long time now. There is rarely one major thing that goes wrong in marriages, often, it is a plethora of reasons. She admits to Jane that one of the main reasons was that they both stopped making time for each other leading to more friction between them. Marriages, as much as we would like them to be, are seldom easy work. As Jane's father would be pointing out to her later in the episode, "a good marriage is a constant dance of commitment, compromise and communication".

So what does it take to make a marriage happy? Guess there is no real blueprint - you wade through the tides and hope you get through in one piece.

'The Bold Type' airs on Thursdays at 9/ 8c on Freeform.
