'The Blacklist' Season 7 Episode 4: Fans are mad at Liz for not knowing Maddy is Katarina, but what if she's playing the long con?

The biggest clue that Liz knows exactly what she is dealing with was her making coffee for Katarina. In the latter's moment of hesitation you could see her weighing the options between spending quality time with her daughter and walking on the side of caution, she chose the former.

Liz ( Megan Boone), we were made to believe by 'The Blacklist', is one of the best FBI profilers out there. She has been working on some of the biggest most important and classified cases for the FBI  for seven years now, and we have never known her to be shoddy at her job, so why is she unable to identify that her Russian neighbor who looks the same age as her murderous mother and moved in under very suspicious circumstances is in fact, her murderous mother who recently kidnapped her father figure (or actual father, we haven't solved that mystery yet) Red (James Spader)?

Katarina (Laila Robins) is patient and ruthless, and she is not above using her own daughter and granddaughter to get what she wants. However, there were moments in the previously aired Season 7 Episode 3 of the NBC show, where we felt like that she is actually warming up to the idea of having an actual family with the two girls. Even if mentioned as a character backstory for Maddy, Katarina told Liz that she has moved into the building to be closer to her estranged daughter and is hopefull of reconnecting with her.

In these moments, especially, it became too difficult for us fans to imagine that Liz is oblivious to Katarina's identity, which is why we have a theory that Liz actually knows what Maddy's real identity is. She is just waiting to see what Katarina's plans are, and she will strike at the right moment. Think about it. Liz tells her that she too has an estranged mother, and looks intently as "Maddy" plays with Agnes. She doesn't let Agnes out of her sight for anything and while it may be dangerous to have Katarina around, Liz - in her own twisted way - wants Agnes to have these moments with her grandmother.

However, the biggest clue that Liz knows exactly what she is dealing with was her making coffee for Katarina. In the latter's moment of hesitation you could see her weighing the options between spending quality time with her daughter and walking on the side of caution, she chose the former. We bet Liz gave her the cup to get some DNA evidence on her or has left some gizmo attached to it.

We haven't worked out the logistics yet, we would rather bet that Liz is a good profiler than her putting her own life along with than Agnes at risk. Hopefully, the upcoming Season 7 Episode 4 of 'The Blacklist' will reveal Liz's gameplan.
