The Beach Boys are a famous American rock band formed in Hawthorne, California, in 1961. The original members were brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Known for their harmonies, youthful lyrics, and musical creativity, they are influential in rock music.

Their music was inspired by older pop groups, 1950s rock, and black R&B. Brian, the main songwriter, often added classical or jazz elements and unique recording methods to their songs. Managed by their father Murry, they gained popularity in the 1960s with hits like 'Surfin' U.S.A.' capturing the California youth culture.

By 1966, they focused on deeper lyrics and complex arrangements, notably with the 'Pet Sounds' album and 'Good Vibrations' single. Despite setbacks like the shelving of the 'Smile' album, Brian eventually passed leadership to other band members.

Though their US success waned in the late 1960s, they rebranded in the early 1970s, led by Carl until the mid-1970s. Tragedy struck with Dennis's death in 1983, and Brian's estrangement from the group followed Carl's passing in 1998.

Legal rights for touring were given to Love after Carl's death, but in 2010, the original members reunited briefly for their 50th anniversary. As of 2024, Brian and Jardine remain official members.

With over 100 million records sold worldwide, The Beach Boys have left a global mark, influencing various music genres from psychedelia to alternative rock. They achieved 37 US Top 40 hits, including four number-ones on the Billboard Hot 100.

Their legacy is recognized by Rolling Stone's ranking as the 12th greatest artists of all time in 2004, and their albums are lauded by critics. The founding members were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
