'The Batman': Jeffrey Wright posts 'The Long Halloween' cover, fuels theories of film being based on comic

When Matt Reeves announced his plans about 'The Batman', speculations were rife that the Robert Pattinson-starrer was inspired by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's 'The Long Halloween'. The comic has been one of DC's best-selling editions since its release.

'The Long Halloween' charts the early days of Bruce Wayne as Batman. It also included the storyline where he and Selina Kyle were seeing each other. The issue centers on a mysterious foe who kills one person a month, while Batman takes close to a year to solve the crime.

The theories that 'The Long Halloween' might indeed be the storyline resurfaced when actor Jeffrey Wright, who essays the role of Jim Gordon, in the film, took to Instagram where he posted an image of him holding the comic in his hand. On his part, Reeves had previously said the film would borrow from a number of comics, which had fans talking about which comics would be included.

A classic example to prove this is Pattinson's new-look Batsuit. The design was previously seen in Scott Snyder's 'Batman: Zero Year' storyline, which featured a younger Batman just like the movie. There's that same homemade feel to the design but with a bit more sleekness to it. But with all that said, the crowning glory of the new design is the symbol. For the first time ever, the Bat symbol isn't just a logo, it's got a hard metallic look that suggests that it may have been crafted out of the parts of the gun that killed Thomas and Martha Wayne.

'The Batman' also stars Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nygma/The Riddler, Colin Farrell as Oswalt Cobblepott/The Penguin, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and John Turturro as Carmine Falcone. Newcomer Jayme Lawson has been cast in a currently-unknown role.

'The Batman' will release in theaters on June 25, 2021.
