Early life and theatre
Born on January 2, 1971, as Scott Leo “Taye” Diggs, the American actor was born in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in Rochester, New York. He is the oldest of five children. He attended Allendale Columbia School in Rochester and later transferred to the School of the Arts. Apart from that, he also received a degree in Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theatre from Syracuse University. Diggs made his broadway debut in 1994 with the musical ‘Carousel’.
In 1995, he also performed in Sebastian's Caribbean Carnival at Tokyo Disneyland.
His breakthrough role came in 1996 when he portrayed the character of landlord Benny in Tony Award-winning and Pulitzer Prize-winning theatre production ‘Rent’, which also starred Idina Menzel.
