Taye Diggs is an American actor who started his career by appearing in various theatre productions. The actor will be hosting the 26th edition of the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday, March 7, 2021, for the third consecutive time. 

Diggs is famous for appearing in stage productions over the course of his career, and he is also a singer. Apart from featuring on several theatre productions, Diggs has achieved a lot of success in the entertainment industry and has appeared on a variety of TV shows like ‘Law & Order’, ‘The West Wing’, ‘Private Practice’ and ‘Empire’.

Early life and theatre

Born on January 2, 1971, as Scott Leo “Taye” Diggs, the American actor was born in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in Rochester, New York.  He is the oldest of five children.  He attended Allendale Columbia School in Rochester and later transferred to the School of the Arts. Apart from that, he also received a degree in Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theatre from Syracuse University. Diggs made his broadway debut in 1994 with the musical ‘Carousel’.

In 1995, he also performed in Sebastian's Caribbean Carnival at Tokyo Disneyland.

His breakthrough role came in 1996 when he portrayed the character of landlord Benny in Tony Award-winning and Pulitzer Prize-winning theatre production ‘Rent’, which also starred Idina Menzel.

Over this period, he established himself as a stage actor with performances at theaters across New Hampshire.



 

Television and Film Career

Diggs made a name for himself in the theatre world and it was really easy for him to transition to film and television roles by this point. He started his TV career in 1997 with the TV series ‘Guiding Light’ and soon went on to make his feature film debut after joining the cast of ‘How Stella Got Her Groove Back’ in 1998.

With time passing, Diggs started appearing in movies like ‘Go’, ‘The Wood’ and ‘The Best Man’.

In 2002, he played the role of Andrew Brandt in the 2002 movie ‘Equilibrium’ alongside Christian Bale. The movie turned out to be a huge success for him and took his popularity to a whole new level. During this period, he also made several appearances as the love interest of Will in the series ‘Will & Grace’.

In 2007, he was one of the main characters in the series ‘Private Practice’, which was a spin-off of the show ‘Grey's Anatomy’. The series was quite successful and ran until 2013. ‘Opening Night’, ‘Sesame Street’, ‘New Girl’, All American’ and ‘The Fab Five’ are some of the projects he has been a part of in his illustrious career.



 

Personal Life

Diggs married Idina Menzel in 2003 and led a happy life. They met each other for the first time in 1996 while working together on a theatre production titled ‘Rent’. In September 2009, the couple welcomed their first child, Walker Nathaniel Diggs. In 2013, Diggs and Menzel separated after ten years of marriage. Their divorce was finalized on December 3, 2014.

Real Estate

In 2011, Diggs bought a home in Studio City for $2 million. The gorgeous-looking property had 5,000 square feet of living space, 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. He bought the house for his then-wife, Idina Menzel, and his child. The entire property was loaded with amenities such as a swimming pool, spa, treehouse, three-car garage, and manicured gardens. After their separation, they listed the house for $2.995 million. However, they could only fetch $2.55 million for the property.
