Friday, July 22, was a good day for 'The Walking Dead' fans at San Diego Comic-Con since they got to see the trailer of the new show, 'Tales Of The Walking Dead,' which will premiere on Sunday, August 14. As soon as the trailer was released, fans chimed in with their thoughts on the episodic anthology, which will follow different characters from the 'The Walking Dead' TV universe, including new and old.

'Tales of the Walking Dead' presented a video for the spin-off series at its Friday panel in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con, and sure, there were zombies. The episodic anthology series, which debuts on AMC and AMC+, will present six new stories set within 'The Walking Dead Universe's walker apocalypse. The first season of 'Tales' will consist of six unique one-hour standalone episodes, each with its own distinct tone and point of view, and will center on new and returning characters, including Dee (Samantha Morton), the woman identified only as Alpha of the Whisperers on 'The Walking Dead.' The flagship show and earlier spin-offs, 'The Walking Dead: Word Beyond' and 'Fear the Walking Dead,' will serve as a starting point for the series' exploration of plot holes and unexplored territory.

The show has been defined as "an episodic anthology with individual episodes or arcs of episodes focused on new or existing characters, backstories, or other standalone experiences." by AMC. Embeth Davidtz ('Matilda'), Loan Chabanol ('The Transporter Refueled'), Danny Ramirez ('No Exit'), Jessie T Usher ('Shaft'), Olivia Munn ('The Predator'), Jillian Bell ('Brittany Runs a Marathon'), Poppy Liu ('Sunnyside'), Terry Crews ('Brooklyn Nine-Nine'), Parker Posey ('Blade: Trinity'), and Anthony Edwards ('Top Gun') are among the performers portraying new characters in 'The Walking Dead' universe. Most of those stories and actors were featured in the trailer, including Alpha's daughter Lydia seeming to be hiding from her mother, Edwards as a scientist investigating the dead, and Posey as some kind of zombie denier. Channing Powell, who has worked as a writer and producer on 'The Walking Dead' and 'Fear the Walking Dead,' serves as showrunner and collaborates on the project alongside 'Walking Dead' universe chief content officer Scott M Gimple.

From the Hall H stage, Morton remarked about reprising her role as Alpha/Dee on Tales. "I was so gutted when Alpha died. The role of a lifetime," Morton stated. "And then when I got the call that this was going to happen potentially, I was more than excited. I'm 45 years old, and as an actress and a woman, the roles kind of change in television and film.… They can be pretty rubbish. So, for me, this was a role of a lifetime." Morton also disclosed a major distinction between her 'Tales' memories and those seen on 'The Walking Dead': "They were Lydia's flashbacks," she noted. "So we don't know if they were true or not… This is Dee's perspective."

Ramirez and Crews discussed how much they love the series, with Crews revealing that he has been a fan since 1968, the year of both his birth and the release of the groundbreaking zombie movie 'Night of the Living Dead': "Duane Jones, the star of Night of the Living Dead. First time I ever saw a Black hero who was literally running the show."

Satrazemis explained how 'Tales' will differ from the initial 'Walking Dead' by being self-contained adventures rather than one big, drawn-out story: "These are short, concise little films that have a beginning, middle, and an end."

As soon as the trailer was released online, people on the internet seemed to be divided. A fan on Twitter commented on the trailer, saying that there shouldn't have been a spin-off at all. Their tweet read: "The Walking Dead producers flooded the zombie market with inferior IPs such as: Fear, World Beyond, Tales, at a time when the main series was being budgetarily starved. The mismanagement of #TheWalkingDead franchise has been painful to watch. There should've been no spin-offs!"

Also throwing shades at the CGI on the trailer, a fan wrote: "Is this a whole bunch of CGI deers? #TalesOfTWD." However, the lineup has undoubtedly piqued the interest of fans, as one fan wrote: "#TalesOfTWD trailer looks incredible, the lineup is crazy can’t waittttt." Another fan wrote commenting on the new characters joining the franchise tweeted: "It's pretty cool how different the people pulling for the same role are with #TWD. Gonna be interesting to see how the characters turn out in their respective episodes Who knows could always see these actors join #TWDFamily some day later down the line. #TalesOfTWD." However, Alpha fans are surely enjoying her return, as one wrote: "Alpha deserves her own spin-off! She’s cooler than Negan ever was #TalesOfTheWalkingDead #TalesOfTWD #TWD #TheWalkingDead."
