As the world limps back to normalcy, comic fans will have a lot to celebrate as the San Diego Comic-Con is all set to take place on July 22-26. Prior to this announcement for which the comic and film geek universe waited with bated breath, the much-anticipated event of the year was canceled after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. This time around, SDCC 2020 will be a virtual affair and it is the first time in 50 years that the biggest pop culture celebration switches from an in-person event to a virtual one.

The main highlights of SDCC are usually the panels where the creators, cast and crew of popular films and TV shows drop in and make announcements. Most top studios across the world use SDCC as a platform to introduce their upcoming content.

SDCC for this year is officially titled, Comic-Con@Home and in its statement says it combines "aspects of the convention experience with the comforts of home" and "deliver the best of the Comic-Con experience and a sense of its community to anyone with an internet connection and an interest in all aspects of pop culture." The template of how it works pretty much remains the same.

Talking about the virtual event, SDCC spokesperson David Glanzer said: "For the first time in our 50-year history, we are happy to welcome virtually anyone from around the globe. Though stay-at-home conditions make this a very difficult time, we see this as an opportunity to spread some joy and strengthen our sense of community." When SDCC was initially canceled, attendees who had spent countless hours in wait were offered refunds or the chance to transfer their badges to the 2021 event.

Details and a concrete schedule of the panels will be announced leading up to the event which also includes instructions on how fans will be able to participate online. This piece of news comes as a delight as movies and TV shows will be arriving in the latter part of the year as the filming resumes.
