On November 17 evening, Mayor Jennifer Ananda proclaimed that Lawrence, Kansas, was now the "official hometown of Sam and Dean Winchester, fictional characters of the television show Supernatural" at the City Commission Meeting. Ananda said that in her last full meeting as mayor, this was "something she wanted to do because it was exciting and fun" and as a moment of "levity" before stepping down as mayor after a particularly tough year. She added that she "came of age with the Winchester brothers". She hoped that one day, once the pandemic was finally over, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padelecki would finally visit Sam and Dean's hometown and take the "haunted tour downtown and take care of some of those ghosts and The Eldritch".

The text of the proclamation read: "Whereas two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester have been engaged in saving people, hunting things, the family business, for 15 years through the television show 'Supernatural', fighting vampires, demons, Lucifer, ghosts and other things that go bump in the night, including on occasion, angels. Whereas Sam and Dean Winchester were born in Lawrence, Kansas to Mary and John Winchester, who also grew up in Lawrence, the boys frequently visited Lawrence, Kansas, had Kansas car tags on the Impala, more commonly known as "Baby" by Dean, had Lawrence area code phone numbers and even fought the Devil in the Stull cemetery just outside Lawrence. And of course, they were fans of the J Hawks. And whereas, while never perfect, Sam & Dean Winchester fought for what was right & good ― family, friends, fairness and helping others. They represent true Kansans, and especially Lawrencians, rising literally from the flames of death more than once, & persevering through difficulties, 'Ad Astra per Aspera'. Now, therefore I, Jennifer Ananda, mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas do hereby proclaim Lawrence, Kansas as the official hometown of Sam and Dean Winchester."

The City of Lawrence Kansas' official Twitter account also posted a video of the proclamation, while announcing the happy news on Twitter on November 18. It also followed up with a tweet that quoted the proclamation on how the boys represented "Lawrencians".

There was an immediate outpouring of gratitude from fans about the city recognizing the iconic characters. "For all of us who have loved & supported this show thru thick & thin ratings, this proclamation means a lot. It signals that we are not the only ones to recognize the impact, importance, & legacy that #Supernatural and Sam & Dean Winchester have. Y'all rock!" tweeted one fan reacting to the post. While another tweet suggested that their Twitter handle was going to get a lot of traffic from the show's fans. "Congrats @lawrenceks you've just unleashed the spn fandom onto your Twitter feed. Your social media person is going to need some OT and a bonus after this week," joked a user. Another tweet commented: "Once Covid is sorted in the US (give it a few years) you’ll have lots of #SPNFamilyForever coming to visit. Start preparing now!"

At the time of publishing, the tweet sharing the proclamation had already racked up more than 3,000 likes and 900 retweets. The 'Supernatural' series finale airs on Thursday, November 19, on The CW from 9 pm that will be preceded by a one hour 'looking back' special. So the timing of this could not have been more perfect. The boys have finally come home.
