ABC’s classic 60's TV game show, ‘Supermarket Sweep’, is fast-paced and energetic following three pairs as they battle it out using their grocery shopping skills and knowledge of merchandise to win big cash prizes. In any other year, people sprinting like maniacs through fully stocked grocery store aisles, hurriedly filling their carts would make "good old regular TV" but during the year of a pandemic, amidst coronavirus lockdown a trip down the supermarket might seem like an American horror story.

Comedienne and actress Leslie Jones, current host, is herself a big fan of the vintage game show as she informs everyone at the beginning of the show and the participants as well as the viewers get a glimpse of her energy that others should keep up with. The very first three teams for the show this season were ‘Team Sugar’, next door neighbours Louis and Julia who have a total of nine kids together, ‘Team Biscuits’, best friends Jeleah and Chealsea when asked by Leslie why do they call themselves biscuit they said, “We are from the south, we have biscuits with every single meal and we love to sop it up” and finally ‘Team Wings’ comprising of Drew and Ryan because they love chicken wings, what else!

First round consists of a mini challenge where the contestants will be thrown a riddle, like, “When last night, masala had left a big stain, remove the curry in a hurry, by using —”, then the first team to guess the answer gets extra points that comes really handy at the end of the show. Power moms Team Sugar want the first mini sweep. Other mini challenges are also guessing games like ‘Stop Faking It’ where one has to guess which vegan food is fake or does not exist and ‘Logo Motion’ where the participants have to guess the brand from the outline of its logo appearing on the screen.

The next big challenge is the most fun partly because it's the gateway to hit the jackpot and go home with $100,000 dollars and also the contestants finally get to take their cart and sweep. Leslie gives them a situation and this is when it gets really fun and the executive producer’s comedic timing comes to play. She tells them they need to shop for her so that she can spend a single girl night to herself. Items on the list are Cucumber, honey, meat, inflatable, spatula, a dozen roses and a few other things. The more items they can grab, the more points they make. It ends with a riddle round and one team gets eliminated.

Team Sugar and Team Wings made it through the round and finally Team Sugar made it to the final round (they got a push forward since they bagged points on mini challenges). The power mom goes on to win $50,000 and decides to stop there because if they lose they lose it all. They were very happy thinking about the number of diapers they could buy.

Catch ‘Supermarket Sweep’ every Sunday at 8/7c, only on ABC.
