Warning: Contains spoilers for 'Sugar'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'Sugar' premiered its final episode of the first season on Apple TV+ on Friday, May 17, 2024, bringing an end to one of the most talked about shows in recent memory.
The show was created by Mark Protosevich and directed by Fernando Meirelles and Adam Arkin.
The series features Colin Farrell, Kirby, Amy Ryan, Dennis Boutsikaris, Nate Corddry, Alex Hernandez, James Cromwell, Anna Gunn, and others
'Sugar' follows the life of a mysterious private investigator, John Sugar (Colin Farell), who refrains from violence, doesn't feel the effects of alcohol, and injects himself with an unknown fluid on his neck every day.
He is given the task of finding Olivia Siegel (Sydney Chandler), who is missing. As he investigates this mystery, he takes us on a wild ride, creating moments that will stay etched in our memories till the end of time.
Here are five of the best moments from 'Sugar'.
Sugar reveals his identity as an alien
Heading into Episode 6 of the series, there were many speculations about Sugar's identity after the strange events that occurred throughout the first five episodes.
He experienced strange neural pain, and hallucinations, and, upon bleeding, would be treated with a blood bag carried by Dr Henry (Jason Butler Harner). He often looked into the sky, staring at the moon, and was unaffected by alcohol.
We could see that the makers of the show were up to something strange with this character, but in Episode 6, when the final revelation happened, the internet collectively went into hysteria discussing the scene where an injection turned him into an alien.
This by far is the biggest moment in the series.
David Siegel's attempted suicide and eventual death
David Siegel (Nate Corddry) starts as a character who intervenes in John Sugar's investigation. He is a man who comes from privilege and has often abused it.
He gets publicly exposed as a sexual offender, and his involvement with Stallings (Eric Lange), a woman trafficker, comes to the fore as well.
David's father, Bernie Siegel (Dennis Boutsikaris), and mother, Margit (Anna Gunn), protect him from Sugar until he finally comes out and talks to John Sugar, confessing that he talked to Stallings about Olivia, who encouraged women to speak up against him.
In his final moments, before he shoots himself, he is consumed by guilt and anxiety. He survives but is left in a vegetative state, and his family makes the decision to let him die.
His death is an important moment that happens in Episode 5 of the series as it galvanizes the dysfunctional Siegel family.
Sugar attends a movie screening
An aspect of John Sugar's personality is his fondness for movies. This is established multiple times as he engages in discussions with Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell) and Melanie (Amy Ryan). He claims to have learned a lot about the world from movies.
In Episode 4 of the series, he attends a movie screening, starry-eyed, which also happens to be the name of the episode. However, the screening soon turns into another event in the investigation.
The plot of the series intertwines the world of cinema and mystery, and this moment was a great reminder of the impact of cinema on John Sugar's life.
Sugar gets violent and kills three people
John Sugar has been established as a character who avoids violence unless it is necessary to defend himself. In his line of work, he cannot avoid violence for too long, but he exercises as much restraint as possible.
In Episode 6, however, he is cornered by Stallings and his men, and in a moment of desperation, he reverses course and kills three people.
Later on in the series, in Episode 7, he undergoes a moment of self-reflection, analyzing how the human world has changed him. He admits that he killed the third person because he felt powerful and wanted to kill him.
Sugar tells Melanie his secret
While he doesn't speak about the extraterrestrial part, he tells Melanie about having a secret and that his job as a private investigator is a smoke screen. Melanie interprets it as him being a foreign spy.
The moment in Episode 7 is significant because it reflects the chemistry that John Sugar shares with Melanie. Since he begins investigating the case, he forms a bond with Melanie, and the trust between them is strong enough for him to admit that he harbors a secret.
He finally tells her about the secret in Episode 8 as he holds her hand and feels a sigh of relief in an emotional scene
