LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: When Jesse Armstrong announced that the fourth season will mark the end of ‘Succession,’ there was absolute despair and a carnival of heartbreaks in the online community which wanted nothing but to dive into the world of Roy’s with every chance they get. The magnificent, awful force of Logan that Kendall spoke about in the penultimate episode of the show, was what blew the minds of everyone listening and watching intently. The world of ‘Succession’ is tricky to remember for its various themes and the wide array of characters in it. For anyone following, it takes repeated viewings to learn about the dynamics of the Roy family and the people who loathe them. The fans believed that given the diverse issues portrayed on the show, there will be multiple seasons before the story is finally wrapped up.

However, the creator of ‘Succession,’ Jesse Armstrong broke their hearts. He hung his boots and declared the fourth season as the last. There were drawbacks, with the netizens shouting from the bottom of the abyss, pointing towards the inexplicable plot points and storylines that still need their fair conclusion. But now it’s highly likely that many storylines that were introduced and then forgotten about may rest in that way while the focus shifts completely to saving Waystar from Lukas Matsson. The intertwined storylines may not offer the satisfaction that we need but ‘Succession’ will surely offer the ending that we deserve. But what were the huge storylines or plots that still remain to be explored or demand conclusion? Let’s look at a few.

Kendall’s accident in Season 1

In the finale of the first season, Kendall Roy went on a rampage in order to score some drugs. He got into a car with a member of the waiting staff, a young folk, who eventually drove the car off the bridge. Kendall survived. But despite his best efforts, he couldn’t pull out the other person from the water. His involvement in the incident was later brought to Logan's notice who made the entire thing go away to save his son. Kendall dropped the idea of a hostile takeover of Waystar and became Logan’s pet until the end of Season 2.

Since the incident, Kendall blames himself for the death of the person who he couldn’t save. It molded him into the strong, resilient Kendall that we witnessed in Season 4. However, this incident was also used by Logan to blackmail Kendall when he went against the grain in the third season. But eventually, there were no legal or criminal repercussions that Kendall had to go through. Colin, Logan’s head of security, knows Kendall’s truth. But the question is whether Colin will ever speak up. There’s only the finale left to see what he does as Kendall fights for the Waystar throne. This is one plot that has fizzled out during the show.

Is Tom and Shiv’s divorce inevitable?

Since the brutal confrontation between Tom and Shiv in the seventh episode of the final season, there has been no clear indication as to where their relationship is headed. Shiv’s revelation about her pregnancy didn’t evoke any emotional response from Tom. During the final season, the duo fought, made up, and are on a path of reconciliation again. But there is no empathy among them. There is no way that Shiv would look to continue her relationship with Tom as it doesn’t serve her interests. But again, she really cares about their unborn baby. Pregnancy has changed her. “Maybe the poison drips through” is what Kendall said to Shiv when he compared himself to Logan, their father. After all their fights and reconciliations, it’s still difficult to see Tom and Shiv coming together in the finale. It’s difficult to expect closure in this story.

Gerri and Roman — one last dance?

Gerri, who is Shiv’s godmother and Roman’s verbal dominatrix has endured a challenging spell under the leadership of Logan. Gerri and Roman survived a twisted relationship where Gerri’s demeaning comments aroused Roman as he masturbated to them at times. Roman was mistreated by his siblings as a child and was sent to military school against his will. He relied on Gerri but the finale of Season 3 saw Gerri betraying Roman.

Since then, Roman has mistakenly fired Gerri, asked Kendall to bring her back, and has himself asked Gerri to come back to Waystar. After Roman’s breakdown in the penultimate episode of the series, Gerri might not have comforted him directly but showed signs of empathy when Karl showed a viral video of Roman crying at the funeral. The duo still has a lot to say to each other and maybe the finale doesn’t offer them a chance to close the loop.
