'Star Trek: Lower Decks' Episode 3 Preview: Crunch time on USS Ceritos has everyone panicking

Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) is not happy with the way things have been running on the USS Ceritos and believes that it's time for a change. She wants her ship to run more efficiently, with harder work from its crew than ever before. The crew is going to be pushed to their limits, with countdown timers hanging over their head for every task they need to complete in record time. They're sleep deprived, panicked and their work is being held up to ridiculously high standards. Naturally, Ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) is delighted.

The preview for the next episode of 'Star Trek: Lower Decks' titled 'Temporal Edict' sees the crew of the USS Ceritos given strict orders from their captain to really put their nose to the grindstone in an attempt to make the USS Ceritos feel more important than it is. While everyone's initially confident of their ability to hunker down and get more work done in less time, Brad Boimler seems to be the only one with a spring in his step and no bags under his eyes.

With all the stress from work on the ship, dealing with a group of very hostile aliens must feel like a relief. Ensign Beckett Mariner (Tandy Newsome) will join Jack Ransom (Jerry O'Connell) and a field team on a new alien planet and the locals do not seem very happy to see them. An underslept crew is forced to dodge spears, electric nets and giant yellow trolls in gladiatorial arenas just to survive. It's the perfect opportunity for Jack Ransom to play the hero on a barbaric alien world, but it looks like he may also be taking a cue or two from Ensign Mariner.

Mariner knows a thing or two about getting out of trouble and she's heard saying, "Sometimes, you have to do what's wrong to survive." That's not a statement that bodes well for the locals of the planet and it sounds like there's a Directive or two that's about to be broken, just as well that Boimler's so occupied with all the extra work back on the Ceritos. The official 'Star Trek' website has released a preview of the episode, adding the tagline, "Behold! We have touched a time crystal and brought you a sneak peek at episode three of 'Star Trek: Lower Decks.'" You can watch the video here.

This episode of 'Star Trek: Lower Decks' airs on CBS All Access on August 20.
