SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA: Blackpink is the biggest girl group in the world and quite realistically, the popularity of the girl group is not limited to South Korea alone. The 2016 girl group has now achieved a position for itself that they are free to do the things they like without being bashed by the Korean Entertainment Industry for the smallest of their choices. The news of Jennie making an acting debut after bandmate, Jisoo shocked fans but now it has been rumored that Jennie's debut role is that of playing a bisexual person.

Back in July of 2022, it was announced that Jennie would be starring in the six-episode HBO Original show, 'The Idol' with actress Lily-Rose Depp and American singer, The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) in the lead roles. The show 'The Idol' is set to release later this year which Blinks (fans of Blackpink) are extremely excited about. The excitement also revolves around Blackpink trending globally for their recent release, 'Pink Venom' and their highly anticipated second album, 'Born Pink' followed by the girl group's subsequent world tour this year. But as new claims drop about Jennie's queer role in the upcoming HBO show, it seems like the support of Blinks is split.

Unlike most countries in the world, South Korea is still adapting to the existence of more sexualities in a heteronormative society. In the past, there have been actors who have portrayed homosexual characters in South Korean web dramas, popular shows that air on TV does not have enough same-sex couples, and do not ever portray famous celebrities as non-heterosexual characters. Now as the trailer for the Sam Levinson show 'The Idol' drops, fans wonder if Jennie will be making her debut as a queer character. Unlike many other popular groups, Blackpink has always been LGBTQIA+ allies in the past as the members were seen holding the pride flag during concerts and more, however, there has always been a severe backlash against homosexuality in South Korea.

The trailer of 'The Idol' shows Jennie's character in a sauna, dressed in a towel as Lily-Rose's character enters dressed in a bikini and sits across from her. While this does not necessarily mean that Jennie's character is bisexual, fans believe that the scene gives off "sapphic" vibes. This assumption has many fans praising Jennie's choice of accepting the role of a queer character for her acting debut despite her stature and fame in a country like South Korea. But with that being said, some of Jennie's fans have their resignations about the Blackpink member portraying a bisexual character as they wonder if the makers are queerbaiting fans due to the popularity of Jennie and Lily-Rose Depp.

Fans are sharing their reactions to the scene in question featuring Jennie as one fan said, "QUEERBAIT OR NOT IDC I AM GETTING SAPPHIC VIBES FROM JENNIE KIM." One more fan said, "Whoever spread that fake ss of an article saying jennie’s character in the idol is bisexual, i hope you know you just spread chaos bc every non fans believe it well as long as they’re tuning in ig, let’s go queerbaiting!" One fan said, "The director yelled “queerbaiting” but jennie heard “QUEEN ATE IT !” and rolled with it."
