‘Solar Opposites’ new trailer demonstrates 6 stages of social distancing, very relatable to life in lockdown

A new trailer (of sorts) for Justin Roiland’s upcoming Hulu animated sci-fi comedy ‘Solar Opposites’ dropped on Tuesday, April 28, and it’s more relevant to the world right now than you can imagine.

‘Solar Opposites’ looks and feels a lot like ‘Rick and Morty’ and follows a family of aliens -- Terry (Thomas Middleditch), Korvo (Roiland), Jesse (Mary Mack), Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone), and the Pupa -- who escape their doomed home planet and end up on Earth, living in the suburbs of middle America. As they indulge in their shenanigans, going through everyday life, trying to blend in, these aliens are very split on whether or not they like Earth, and especially humans. And there is a lot to dislike.

The earlier trailers and teasers have introduced the family quite well, but this new trailer makes this very alien family altogether more relatable because they too are in lockdown, in a way. Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus pandemic, most of the world has been on lockdown. People have been forced to maintain social distancing, and they have been forced to stay cooped up inside their homes. And this exercise has taken a toll on many of us.

Boredom makes way for ennui and lethargy. And of course, cabin fever. The new ‘Solar Opposites’ trailer charts the change in their moods as the number of days of their lockdown on earth progresses and the picture is not pretty!

Day 1 is innocuous enough. They watch TV. They appreciate the character Funbuckets as he spouts catchphrases and violently murders innocent people on screen. In fact, astonishingly like humans, these aliens binge-watch Funbuckets, not realizing they’d soon run out of things to watch. Or they would just grow tired of it.
Sure enough, when Day 5 arrives, we see them participating in alien card tricks. Yeah, that will remain fun for long. By Day 8, the conflicts begin. Terry and Korvo argue as one works hard and the other lazes around.

Day 12 sees full-blown emotional turmoil. It has all the tell-tale markers of a breakdown: ramblings, tears, anxiety, and talks of bucket lists and finding true love. Yikes! But Day 17 is where things get real. Their pet, the Pupa, seems to have given up on social norms and has decided to dance away from its problems. And who hasn’t been there, eh? And then we have Day 69: plans for escaping.

‘Solar Opposites’ with its cast and creators already promises to be a fantastic show. But this trailer adds a whole new dimension to it. In addition to the show regulars, the series also boasts a phenomenal list of guest voice actors, which includes the likes of Alan Tudyk, Tiffany Hadish, Tom Kenny, Alfred Molina, Christina Hendricks, Rainn Wilson, Eric Bauza, Amanda Leighton, Maurice LaMarche, Miguel Sandoval, Nat Faxon, Natalie Morales, Phil LaMarr, and Kari Wahlgren.

Yes, we’re in lockdown. But that doesn’t mean we can’t be excited about this. In fact, isn't looking forward to things a way to maintain sanity in these weird times?

Either way, ‘Solar Opposites’ lands May 8, only on Hulu.
